Ooh good idea, plus a car is almost always totaled by the insurance company after a car fire. Crispy criminal AND a new car!

I would have gone into my garage, walked out with a bat and beat him silly with it. I'd be willing to take the assault and battery charge, assuming he could successfully make the charges stick.

That was the first thing I thought of. I'd honestly walk over and kick the door with everything I've got.

He ain't leaving. My situation is a little different here, though... this would probably get you in a lot of trouble in CA.

Ok, the OP said this was in another state. If the state has a Castle Doctrine than no need for the police, just the coroner.

If this is CA law, I might be inclined to take a few pictures while the dude was going to town on my ride. Most dirtbags don't want their picture taken, if said dirtbag tries to take camera from you........I was in fear for my life.

I might just kick the door as hard as I can, repeatedly, when his leg snaps he can't run.

Or, maybe we can just have a little talk about his childhood and how the system has screwed him over. If only more people could understand how hard it is to live your life in fear of the police because they might pin that rape on you. The urban life has many..................Naaaa

If some douche bag get smoked because he was burglerizing cars.........he should have found a better means in which to support himself.

If this was in CA I'd do the following:

                  1. Keep my distance and still keep the perp covered if he made an aggressive move. I would not in any way move to engage unless he engaged first.

                  2. Call for husband to bring out camera, have him stand behind me, and begin taking pictures.

One other option is if I had pepper spray available ask for my spouse to bring it out. I'd then holster my weapon and with my spouse still taking picture proceed to douse him.

At the very least it will give him something else to think about and if he engages me, well, I'd be more than happy to give him some copper-plated presents.

Have the wife call the police back and advise them that her husband his holding the thief at gunpoint. Add that the thief is being very hostile. She should sound scared when speaking to 911. Mention that the thief may have a weapon. (All of that would be true, BTW.) That should speed up PD response. Then have the wife bring out any camera to take some good pictures or video of the BG in action.

If your car has a button on the key fob to turn the alarm on, do that too. Might as well annoy him a little bit.

A bat would be assault with an impact weapon, which is a serious felony.

Hold him at gunpoint until the police arrive is what i would do.

I don't think it happened, and I wouldn't shoot him anyway. Silly story.

Okay you can use force to arrest him since he is committing a crime you just can't use lethal force. I would advise not doing anything in this situation because it is just property and you really have to decide if it's really worth it. Many things can go wrong and only one thing can go right.

How about getting in the drivers side and driving away. If he wants to hang on with his legs out the passenger side, that's his deal...

I like this idea the best so far, possibly coupled with car door to the legs. What a handful of poster suggested, "hold him at gunpoint," doesn't work because the perp is pretty sure you're not going to use the gun.

If I had time to think about it clearly, I think I'd let Carl get nice and comfortable in the thought that neither I nor the cops are going to do anything, then call a handful of friends to come over.
