Not the first time someone behind the counter is not informed and is afraid of anything said might get them fired, you can find poor customer service anywhere sometimes a training problem sometimes a staffing problem sometimes a dont care attitude, the first 2 can be corrected the latter is a termination.
At a Auto Zone a few weeks ago I just wanted a quart of oil,no one manning the register only counter guys helping people with parts then accepting payment for said part.I stayed in line and I was 3rd after 20 minutes only one customer was served many others lined up behind me and most left I waited 37 minutes to get served, only stayed because I just wanted to see how long it would take.
I asked the guy why no one was at the register for just payments and he said usually there was but not today but I had gone in twice before and saw the same thing,I told him you are losing sales and he said not caring "not the first time"So I figured it was a satffing problem which came from the store manager who short staffed to save on Labour which caused a I dont care attitude from the employees who had to listen to crap from customers all day.

It is not an obscure movie, old but not obscure.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

It would be fun to go up to someone 40 or younger and say have you seen that movie ZULU yet?
I think I just found something to watch tonight

It sounds as if we may have had the same knowledgeable hired help at the Eureka Sportsman's Warehouse gun counter located in the back of the store... I was looking for 7mm Mauser 7X57mm, and he tried to sell me 7mm Magnum, or 7mm-08 ammunition first.

That is why post PROP 63, I go down to Real Dull to Grundman's Sporting Goods for my ammunition needs.

I have a break open revolver chambered in .38 Short & Wimpy in my collection...

similar to what happened at our local gun range

guy who seemed pretty new to shooting comes out of the indoor range asking for 38 ammo for his revolver. Employee grabs a box of 38 super off the shelf. I was in line, watching and waiting to see if he was actually gonna ring it up and just before he did, I had to say something. Sure enough, it was a smith in 357...

This was at an indoor range! It was crazy

Either the OP went in there with the intent to make himself feel intelligent by proving his worldly knowledge of obsolete ammunition to teenagers, or he is truly clueless and new to the hobby to think that Big 5 would carry such an obscure product.

In either case, give the kid a break. Like others have said, I didn't know what .38 S&W was when I was 19 either. I'd venture to guess that anyone in possession of such an antique or otherwise uncommon firearm that uses it would know better too.

Unless you're a movie buff, a history buff or are interested in antique firearms (and none of those are mutually exclusive) it is pretty obscure. I've met very few people that have ever heard of the movie.

Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

A person can not walk into 98 percent of Gunshops and expect good customer service , and /or Knowledge of Obscure ammo /firearms .. Why expect good customer service at Big 5 for firearms and ammo..
As stated Before Big 5 is a Shoe store that sells other items. Nothing more nothing less.
There are 2 Shops I frequent and one just got crossed off the list. Last weekend ,never in my life have I had worst customer service.

Large retail companies hire the the least amount of part time people possible, for the lowest pay possible. If you want to find someone who actually knows what they're talking about, you're going to have to go to a non big corporate specialty business. 38 S&W at big 5? Really? You're just **** testing some kid who is most likely thinking about where he's going to party tonight, and who his girlfriend is banging while he's at work.

Yes... doing this at a Big 5 is pretty much the same thing as going to a Chevron and then asking the dude manning the convenience store counter inside how to best find a vacuum leak in your 98 VW Golf....
