Sometimes it's cheap and a good deal. They were selling 50 rounds of Aguila 22LR for $1 not long ago.

The OP is a collector.

No one buys a 38 Smith & Wesson to defend themselves these days.

Probably watched "Zulu" like I did, got a .455 Webley and started to collect break open Brit revolvers so bought a 38S&W Enfield or Webley when they were really cheap in the 80's.

I would never expect a retailer such as Big 5 to stock ammunition in a cartridge such as 38 S&W. I own a few old revolvers that use 38 S&W as well as 32 S&W. I reload for them. It is easier.

I also would not expect Big 5 to try to charge me for a lock that was included with the rifle I bought there, but they did. When I purchased the rifle and filled out the DROS paperwork, I witnessed the employee open the box (to record the serial number) and toss the included lock into a box full of locks under the counter. 11 days later (yes, 11 days...company policy...) I returned to pick up the gun and was told I needed to pay an additional $10 for the lock.

I stated the lock was included with the gun. They told me it wasn't. I stated I saw the employee remove the lock from the gun package and asked if they had video surveillance of the gun counter, and if they could access the footage from 11 days prior. They STFU and gave me the lock.

I also wouldn't expect the manager of my local Big 5 to accuse me of changing the price on an item, but he did. I purchased a folding aluminum camp table that was marked $24.97. At the checkout, I noticed it rung up at $29.99.

I informed the cashier, and showed her the price tag. She was flustered and called for the manager. He showed up and made a big scene (in front of other customers) that 'We don't have prices ending in .97...someone must have put a price tag on that from walmart or someplace!'

I was becoming perturbed at this point. I certainly hadn't changed any price tag, and other customers in line were being held up.

I asked him if we could check the price tags on the other identical items in the store ( they were hanging high up on a wall). He agreed and we walked over to where they were. He looked up and saw they were all tagged $24.97.

All Hell broke loose at that point. He started shouting, 'Ladder, ladder, ladder!!. We need a ladder here right now to correct these price tags!!'

I received a refund for the overcharged $5, but no apology for being accused as a thief from the manager. I think the guy was off his meds.

I haven't set foot in that store since and will never spend another dime there.

There are a lot of good people who work in low paying jobs.

I just would not bet they are there when I go shopping.

1) Clerk's job is to sell ammo.
2) Clerk is "the only person in the store who was authorized to sell" ammo.
3) Clerk knows nothing about ammo and makes dangerous recommendations.
4) OP lets the 19 year old that he is clueless.

So what if the OP goes to absurd lengths to drive the point home? The clerk is a danger to everyone around him and you want to bust the OP's chops for it?
Additionally, they definitely carry 30-06. Even without carrying surplus ammo, the kid should have been able to latch onto that.

The point is store's failure. They sell guns and ammunition.
If they only have one idiot to handle ammo and guns, they should make sure that one idiot knows a bit more than the average donkey about guns and ammo.

This is no different than the idiots you see working for Turners.

I didn't get how if his license to sell expired how coming back the very next day would have resulted in a different outcome.

That being said, OP was still correct he shouldn't be selling the wrong ammo to people. Especially those new to firearms.

Some dummies think you can out 38 spl in 38 SW. Wrong you can put 38SW in a 38 spl and case will split. Selling 38 spl to owner of 38sw is not unsafe .

NOPE, Won't fit, Special case is smaller dia. If per chance the pistol chamber dia is sloppy enough to allow the 'fatter" S&W to chamber in a Special cylinder.

And I believe "Emdawg" is conflating the S&W line of 38 cartridge designations. With the Colt line of 38 cartridge designations. Again, there are physical dimension differences between these proprietary cartridge lines.

Emdawg...... Big 5 obviously stocks 30-06. I have seen mine stock 8mm Mauser and 38 S&W Long.

S&W does have a 32 S&W......and a 32 S&W Long. But not in 38 cal.

Would be quite confusing for a 19 yr old novice of today, to discern the myriad of variations going back to the 1870's.

BTW, when I was 19 yr old. BIG-5 sold handguns.
