Yes that can be a bad thing, my mother has a 38 special revolver and was sold 380 auto ammo, luckily I needed something from her safe and noticed. Also lucky that I own a 380 and put the 10 boxes of ammo to use.

Only employees with a COE can touch the ammo

You should call another store and see if Big 5 carries it. Contact the manager and maybe this can be a teachable moment for that guy and store staff.

Trying to buy ammo at a big box store is a lost cause now. I tried to buy at Sportmans Warehouse and it would have taken an hour to even get served and another half hour to get out the door.

Report it to corporate as well as the store manager. Store manager honestly probably won't do squat about it and could care less if someone loses a hand on his watch. Need the big wigs to keep him and his employees accountable.

                Wow.
                You really outsmarted them.
You went to a store that only sells common ammo and asked for a bunch of uncommon ammo.

Went to Big Five in Santa Ana looking to pick up some ammo. I walk into the store and got directed to the gun counter. An older gentleman was looking at binoculars and was asking questions regarding the quality. What looked like to be a 19-year-old came up and asked me what I needed. When I said ammo, he quickly stated that his license to sell had expire and was the only person in the store who was authorized to sell. I told him it was fine and asked if they had 38 SW so I could buy a box tomorrow. The employee glanced over and pointed at the 38 special. I quickly told him that was the wrong caliber and need 38 SW, he looked over again and said “ I don’t know it says 38 on the box it should be good”. At this point I knew he had no business being the only person “authorized to sell ammunition” after that potentially deadly recommendation. I then asked if he had any surplus like 54R, 30-06, or 8mm mauser knowing for a fact that they did not carry surplus in the store. The kid freaked and told me he had to help the older gentleman and rushed over to the other side. Shortly after a second employee came by and asked if I needed help. When I said yes the kid waved at him and told him and said no because “he got it”. The moment the second employee left he pulled out all the binoculars form the case and gave them all to the older man and continued to stall to avoid talking to me. I left shortly after.

Being the experienced shooter, I know that 38 special will not fit in my 38 SW. If we flip the scenario with a new gun owner at the worst, someone would have lost money on the purchase. What is scary is that this kid is bluntly recommending and grabbing incorrect to sell as he is “the only authorized to sell”. All it takes is a new gun owner to take his word on it and loose a hand to find out the store is not responsible. Calling the Store manager tomorrow to report the poor service. The kid has no business selling ammo and is setting up hand grenades instead.

+1 this. You're a real big guy OP, playing mind games with this 19 year old. When I was 19 I knew what .38 Special was but I sure wouldn't have known what the hell "38 S&W" was either.

OP went to wrong store and asked about hard to find ammo from 19 year old. Fail on OP'S part. Obviously never been there before to buy that ammo. I buy ammo at my local big 5. I get deals at times. I bought them out of hevi shot slugs, buckshot and turkey loads for 6 bucks a box last year on one occasion.

                            1) Clerk's job is to sell ammo.
                            2) Clerk is "the only person in the store who was authorized to sell" ammo.
                            3) Clerk knows nothing about ammo and makes dangerous recommendations.
                            4) OP lets the 19 year old that he is clueless.

So what if the OP goes to absurd lengths to drive the point home? The clerk is a danger to everyone around him and you want to bust the OP's chops for it?
Additionally, they definitely carry 30-06. Even without carrying surplus ammo, the kid should have been able to latch onto that.

Big 5 obviously stocks 30-06. I have seen mine stock 8mm Mauser and 38 S&W Long.

Perhaps the OP was being mean. Or perhaps Big 5 shouldn't have ignorant employees selling the wrong ammo to people. That is a liability, regardless if it's a minimum wage job.
