Buyer looks over gun and accepts. Cash, and only cash, first. Then paperwork.

Some @hole shops do that. F them. Gunther Guns here in Carlsbad doesn't play those stupid games. It's a private transaction not subject to CA sales taxes.

Meet at a parking lot, open trunk, check the gun, pay cash, go inside the store, complete paperwork. I guess, I am one of those dinosaurs?

Actually that's not true. I did sell my 100W Marshall in a parking lot to a nice 50s-ish dude from Elsinore and he was fine with using Venmo.
I use Venmo, sometimes. Mainly just to pay friends (meals, drinks, etc.). There's no way for someone to take their payment back, right? I'd be open to Venmo or Google Pay next PPT.

Edit: Oh. Saw the links regarding Venmo.

I might do that next time. Clearly, everyone has their own thing. I asked for cash before paperwork since I was afraid they'd not have the amount we agreed to AFTER completing the transfer. I stuck around until the buyer was finished, though.

Most? I have never seen a survey of FFL in regards to that.

It is completely false that if the money is transferred in the store that it somehow makes it subject to sales tax.

It raises more issues if you are doing something strange outside of a gun shop and you might get a visit from some black and white sports cars who point things at you, especially if they see the firearm out.

Talk to the dealer and see what they want and if there are any issues that they have.
