Getting a CCW with criminal history

I think, at the very least......you should see if you can make an appt to speak to someone in the CCW unit and ask. You just might get a answer about how long you need to wait if at all.

All these people throwing out "10 years" and I've never heard that before. Call and see what they can tell you. In person if you can would be best.

I agree because those we should we should be afraid of will carry no matter what the law says. IMO all who are free to be in society should have the right to self defense except in a very few cases.

Probably better off staying in CA since marijuana is now legal. Most shall carry "Free States" that do backgound checks still consider Mary Jane a crime.
Constitutional carry states are an option..

Placer County told me after 3 years they will issue ccw's depending on the crime. They said the bigger the crime, the longer it has to be before approval.

The fact you were by itself will not effect their decision, the reason you were denied could.

Decisions on issuance of CCW permits in California are totally subjective, and completely up to the agency applied through. No reason for denial is required of the agency that makes the decision. While it is true that certain agencies in California are similar, or near to "shall issue", NO agency is required to issue one to anyone.

^^^^ This! You were about to embark down a road of a lot, and I mean a lot of research and work, time and effort that my opinion will be for nothing in the end. California is not a shall issue state and the liability that the sheriffs department would face, giving you a CCW with your background and then having you somehow abuse it, would be galactic. Be realistic and look at it from their standpoint, they have far more to lose than anything to gain by issuing you a permit.

I know this is not what you wanna hear but it's the truth. You have made some really ****ty choices as an adult and now you are going to have to suck it up and deal with the consequences; probably the most difficult and most telling part of being a responsible adult, something you are very late to the game at being.

If you really want to to hold a CCW now, move to a shell issue state or Constitutional carry state. If you really want a shot at getting one in California, as things currently stand legally, you're going to have to invest far more time living a law abiding responsible life. As mentioned above, at least 10 years. With the criminal / social record YOU HAVE EARNED, you would be ineligible to "enlist" in the US military, much less ever EVER qualify for a commission.

That is my opinion. Many on this forum seem to be a bit Pollyanna like in their approach to giving advice or dealing with people. I am not. They try ever so hard to tel people what they want to hear. I'm telling yiu want I think you NEED to hear. Do not invest the time...yet.

If you really must "know" for yourself now, I suggest you make an appointment with the sheriffs office and go down and disclose this all in a meeting and see what they say, as others have mentioned.

Here in California, unfortunately, a CCW is not a right but a very guarded and dearly earned privilage.

I'd say give it a few more years. Honestly, 26 is still a bit young and especially considering what happened just four years ago. A lot of people will still be suspicious until you are in your 30s and have proven that you are a new man. I am glad you turned things around, you turned your life away from a very dangerous path, congratulations on doing that. Many people do not. Keep it up! And believe me - that time will go by faster than you can believe. Do not waste a second of your life, it goes by fast.

22 to 26 is ONLY 4 years. Not exactly ancient history (especially as the courts and LE look at it). In the end, it depends on the issuing agency. I can speak for OC (my County) they are VERY strict on this stuff. I've heard of people denied for speeding and traffic tickets. Hell, up until recently possession of amphetamines was a felony wobler and you could have had NO gun rights now. I would not apply in OC with your record, but maybe SB is different. Perhaps someone here can give us more on point info as to SB.

My experience is also for OC, and even with a spotless record, multiple out-of-state CCW permits, and my FFL03/COE, it was not easy to renew my CCW the last time I did.

With your record, OP, your chance of getting a CCW in OC would likely be close to zero %. That said, it's my understanding, from others I know, that it's easier to get a CCW in your county. So, who knows. Much will depend on how you present yourself, if you interview with the SD, and how you answer their questions about your prior history.
