Let me add to the conversation, that carrying a knife or pepper spray is stupid. In the environment described in the post, pulling out either will get you beat up bad and likely stabbed with your own knife. Have any of you boxed or trained at all? You would know that getting yourself beat up is normal in a fight, don't make it worse with your dumb knife.
Gun or none. It's the only real equalizer if you can't physically win the fight.

I agree with those that have said be careful what you post on the internet I would not ask if you should carry illegally. All one can do is weigh the risk and decide for themselves if it worth it, as they say you can only play the hand you are dealt.

I used the term 'qualifies' because where you will be stopped carrying a baseball bat into the county fair, I'll walk right in (ADA and all that messy legal small print).

Naturally it helps to have some medical history, which is easily obtained with any foot, leg, knee or hip problem.
Sure - in both cases it's based on *context*. Carrying a baseball bat while walking to the practice is no problem either.

Where it gets sticky is if the context of your carrying is less than a clear cut. Let's say that you're a healthy male with no walking issues and you carry a "mobility device." That's where problems can happen.

My public defender friend has seen lots of "deadly weapon" upgrades due to baseball bats in the back seats of cars, including the small novelty size.

People have a primordial fear of large dogs. Always a good deterrent.

Only read the first few posts.

In case no one else said it, CA law limits the size of OC you can own to 2.5 oz, BUT it does NOT limit how many of those little suckers you can carry on you at one time.

The bottom line is CA does not want anyone to have means of self defense but you are not likely to be bothered by LE no matter what you carry until you use it in a self defense manner. I see a lot of people carrying bats and golf clubs and walking canes while going for a walk in the neighborhood and the police drive by and keep going. If however you are forced to defend yourself against some thug that just was released from prison I am sure the fact that you had the means to defend yourself will become a issue.
