Try to get legal, having evidence that you tried to be legit and was denied may be of some use (not a lawyer) if, god forbid, the worst occurs (no, not getting caught carrying). I ended up moving to Solano County and Sheriff would approve with good cause. My job is very similar in that I am in abandoned buildings, sketchy areas, alone, etc. but I am also a small business owner, have to carry cash and be out after hours. I have called law enforcement on active break ins., meth labs, squatters. I documented my calls and interaction giving weight to my situation. Sheriff took all in account and a squeaky clean backround and granted me a CCW way back.

Carrying without CCW is bad and could jeopardize basic ability to even own a firearm (felony is possible). BTW like others have suggested pepper spray is a great option that I also carry. Be careful out there.

Being convicted of a firearm related misdemeanor, makes you a prohibited person for 1-5 years (length depends on the judge and/or DA's Office).
Being convicted of a felony, makes you a prohibited person for life.
As a prohibited person, you can not legally own/possess any firearms or ammunition.
