Personally, I'd just do the pepper spray and knife thing. Bringing a gun, especially since no CCW, is asking for more trouble when the likelihood of finding trouble is small.

Be alert, be careful, stay in the car whenever possible.

Yeah, if I was going to be doing this full time on the streets, either get your CCW or bring a dog to walk the beat with you.

bringing a dog with you in a bad part of town is a mistake, lots of loose dogs / pitt bulls, higher chance on dog fights

lots of unlicensed dogs without rabies shots in bad parts of town

I use to walk a Doberman and he would get into dog fights everytime a loose dog came up to us

he was fighting when I picked him up when he was a pup

Let's say you do carry and some deranged nut attacks you with a knife or a gun and you unplug him with your Glock. You're in a courthouse and he's in a morgue, without the gun he's in a courthouse and you're in a morgue.

I know people that carry without a permit, the above illustrates their line of thinking. Of course there are some other extenuating details, like if you accidentally expose your gun and someone calls the cops, but there are ways to carry in which that could virtually never happen. Other ways of defending yourself have been mentioned above, none are as effective as a 9mm but the risks to your freedom and financial position are less. Life is full of risks, we all make choices based on how we handle them. In the end OP, only you can answer your question.

1. You get in car accident and you are incapacitated - they find a loaded firearm on your person, or in your vehicle 'concealed' ---► how do you explain. Note: you will be charged.

2. You are pulled over for minor traffic violation and Officer asks you is there are any firearms in the vehicle. You answer NO, because you have an illegally concealed firearm on your person. But you get searched by however way that may happen. They find a loaded firearm on your person, or in your vehicle 'concealed' ---► how do you explain. Note: you will be charged.

3. I can go on with various possible scenario's ... but I think you get the picture.

I suggest/recommend you maintain legal and sensible ownership and DO NOT conceal carry a firearm without a valid CCW License.

Huge difference between a walking cane, "legally" defined as a mobility device and a baseball bat.

I used the term 'qualifies' because where you will be stopped carrying a baseball bat into the county fair, I'll walk right in (ADA and all that messy legal small print).

Naturally it helps to have some medical history, which is easily obtained with any foot, leg, knee or hip problem.

What if you're LEGALLY transporting a firearm while you are going about your job? Say you have a handgun with loaded mags (not inserted in gun of course) in a quick access biometric safe? And that safe is within reach while you're in the vehicle?

Even in ghetto areas chances are you'll be fine so IMO it's not worth breaking the law.
