You guys who are worried about the OP getting robbed.....would you really go rob a guy who has guns in his house?
People with guns are frequently the target of residential burglaries. They just wait until you leave the house.

      How is that bad?
There has been a "cashier's check scam" going on for a long time.

Here is how it works in standard form. The buyer offers to purchase an item, but says he already has a cashier's check in amount that is a bit more than the value of the item, so he'll send the check and the seller will send him the item for sale and the extra amount.

It all works well, the seller receives the check, goes to the bank, gets cash, packs the item, includes extra cash, sends it to the buyer and all is well. Until a few days later the bank calls to tell the seller that the check was a fake and that they'll deduct that amount from the seller's checking account.

The scam can work practically the same without request for refund if the buyer just wants to steal the item the seller is selling. The scammer can use the item himself, or he can sell it and make some cash.

In this case it's not clear what's going on, but the key is to get cash in a way that cannot be rescinded later, after the item has been shipped.

The safest way is USPS Money Order. These can be verified. http://es-about.usps.com/postal-bull...tml/mo_003.htm

            Yep.

I suggest that. USPS MO and deposit it and make sure funds are good and hold it for extra days since it is a little suspicious now...

Plus I make it a point to buy something in the FFL's shop using one of the $100 bills. The shop likes me for spending money and I get to see that the 100's are real.

A Bank certified check can be canceled just like a personal check. Seller beware!

Scammers are always scamming. My 79 year old father had someone try the cashiers check scam on an RV he was selling. The asking price was $69K the RV was in Las Vegas and the buyer claimed he lived there as well but produced a COPY of cashiers check from some bank in Arkansas, of course it was for $400 more than the asking price and he tried to make the deal after 5pm so you couldn't even call the bank to verify funds. Anyways, my dad is naturally suspicious of everyone and everything so that deal never got off the ground. Then the buyer start selling himself as honest and trustworthy bla bla bla anyways, he never heard from him again. I think they just keep trying their scam until someone falls for it, and people do.

The only cashier's check I would ever accept is one that I watched a bank employee print - like when I closed an account.

I wouldn't worry about it. Folks can pay $6 and find out that exact info if they really want it.

Most retired folks don't leave the house and when they go on vacation the weapons are moved. So there are some folks out there that you just cannot steal their firearms unless you go in blazing/shooting. That's reality.

Ha! Not the first and not the last. You can however bring the cashiers check to your bank teller and ask them to verify its authenticity when you cash it BEFORE dropping off the rifle.
