I love when people give me crap about where I live. You know what though? If any of you are ever in Berkeley, you'll know that you have at least one friend here. I'll give up this house and my guns when I die, not a second before that.

Enjoy wonderland. You'll likely spread that bit of California that rubbed off on you while you were here and ruin that too.
Weaker? You mean your wife won't let you leave or you can't find work out of the state? Moving is admittedly disruptive as hell, a major PITA, and scary to boot.

It actually takes cojones and the desire to find a better life, as you define it, for you and your family.

My "little bit" of California was left behind, after a decade and a half in Texas and the same here in Idaho.

I'm glad you're happy with Berkeley.

I'd definitely use both "wiser" and, in my families case, "wealthier"...that includes both finances and in happiness in general.

I wish my siblings would gtfo of California, but they're happy where they're at and we're about 1.5 hours away by cheap air fare, or around 10 hours by car. No big deal and birthdays and anniversaries rotate between Idaho, Danville, Lincoln, and the Hayward hills. Still lots of ftf contact as bils are all shooters and enjoy care packages from out of the state.

Exactly. I quit my job and I'm not even going to worry about finding work until we get settled in after our move. Things like this are what savings accounts are for.

It obviously wasn't. You talk like a liberal desperately in need of a tampon. It's cool though, let the butthurt keep flowing.

Whether to move or not is a personal decision to make and nobody should be faulted for moving or staying......nor post too much personal detail, on a internet forum of strangers, what lead them to their decision. It is informative to hear from those that did move, how they found things to be in the state they moved to.
The politics of Berkeley have moved too far left and the city has a few too many undesirables....in my opinion. The only gun shop I recall in Berkeley (on College Ave in Elmwood Dist) closed long ago....as did a Russian restaurant across the street from that gun shop that I was a patron of whenever I was in Berkeley. The city is the home of the flag ship of the UC system.....unfortunately, a few too many leftist professors & like minded administrators are @ UCB. I like the variety cafe's & the cultural amenities the city has to offer and like exploring on foot, some of the tree lined streets of older homes. Staying put in Berkeley is what works for you and I can understand that.....just as I can understand for others, like Hanko, they choose another path that worked for them

Count me in as another native Californian who has finally built up enough courage to leave most of the people I know and a position at work that took me years to get to. It is so much work and some sacrifice, but whenever i think about all the things I will soon gain, the California chain around my neck becomes lighter and lighter.

Those of us who have left or are planning the escape do not want to be slaves. We do not want to remain in prison voluntarily, what an insane notion. If one wants to stay, and get along with the guards and play ball, fine, choose that life.

To escape to the unknown, to completely change one's environment for a better life is part of the human condition; from the cavemen, throughout world history, man has always migrated to better living conditions. Ironically California was one of those destinations. Today is no different. And yes, it is easier to stay put, not change, and adapt to the punches thrown at you. And the punches are not going to stop.

And you live in Berkeley? Stockholm Syndrome, indeed.

Tampons and butthurt. A very apropos response given your location and / or proclivities.

Three years ago I had the option of moving out of California. I had two items to work with. So within those limitations, I started doing my "Homework". The "First" was I had two states that would allow the use of my Wife's Retirement Guaranteed health insurance. This was key to me being able to retire. The "Second" was of those two states, which one had the best options for "Not" following California's Gun Control Insanity and Smog Laws.... The bottom line after careful examination and trips to visit favorable areas was, I was better off staying here and getting on with my life. So to those who say "Just Move"...... That is fine if your 20-30 years old and still have a lot of time to work and build a retirement. You can make a mistake and easily recover from it, but its not as easy to recover if your at retirement age or already retired. As always, just my .02.

I did it at 54 and I'm fine but if your mindset tells you that you can't then by all means stay where you are at.

The issue is not only the current CA situation, but also where it is going to become in 10-15 years. This runaway liberal train is heading for a wreck. If you cannot move out of state in your 60's, you will be less capable of moving at 75. Don't be deluded that the current political situation in CA will remain the way it is until you die. Consider that the expected life expectancy in US white males is 84 and, in white females, 88, by the way.
