Yes, the deposit was made in CA, face to face, and I'm screwed. I'm not expecting to get the money back, but at least to teach this guy a lesson is what I'm aiming for.

I was going to say, it sounds about time to send the hommies on a road trip. Vindication will offset the lost $400 and travel expenses. As a bonus you can hit the Waffle House in Phoenix.

private investigator, tracking down all this personal info on the perpetrator sounds like you're going to be out a lot more than $400 in money, aggravation, and time. Nothing but a money pit - quit while you're already behind.
