So... what can actually happen to an FFL who gets their hand caught in the cookie jar?Comment

Nothing yet. I submitted another message via their web form yesterday. I'm going to try to call tomorrow. I might have a direct line phone number somewhere that I'm going to search for from a couple years back when I registered an SKS I bought mail order with my 03/COE.
I'm thinking they're more concerned with their war on evil black rifles than actually enforcing the law as it comes to FFL01s.Comment

Got a phone call from the DOJ when I couldn't answer and they left a message that was little more than referencing the code sections we're all familiar with.
I called back and managed to talk with someone from the compliance division by selecting the phone tree option claiming to be an FFL. He confirmed again what we all know, the max fee for a PPT Transfer of a single rifle is $35. He gave me an email address to submit copies of my paperwork to and I sent that off on Friday.
When I hear back, I'll update this thread again.

Thanks for the update, and another thumbs up to you for pursuing this. Much appreciated.

What about pistol? I thought it was $35 PPT for ALL firearms. I am seeing almost every FFL dealer in Bay Area charging way over the $35 PPT max that you were told.I called back and managed to talk with someone from the compliance division by selecting the phone tree option claiming to be an FFL. PPT = Buyer and seller at the store together to execute the transfer.
The cost by law is limited to $25 DROS plus *not more than* $10 for the dealer fee (for any gun)
If you are looking to have one transferred in from a different FFL or out of state, there is no limit on the dealer fee.- Rich

Lose-lose situation. If the shop closes, anti-gunners win. If they charge more than $35, we're kinda getting screwed.
I usually buy something like a couple boxes of ammo when doing a PPT just to support the shop. They make very little money on each gun and virtually nothing on these PPTs.
Most gun people would not report anyone to the DOJ for firearms violations, shooters or FFLs. The CA DOJ does not have our best interests in mind. I can see both sides. Not sure I would report anyone though.Comment

But the shop won't be shut down over this.
Likely, if this is the first report, they will be informed by the DOJ of the law, and perhaps threatened with a fine if there are future complaints.- Rich

Than the shop might as well be anti 2A playing games with the law and over charging pro gunners. FOLLOW the damn law THEY (FFLs) pushed for....that WE all have to deal with.

It's not greed. If you know anything about FFLs, you'd know it's a very tough business and in many cases they don't make much money at all while assuming a lot of liability.
They are not anti-2A either. They are being squeezed by our anti-gun politicians out of existence. If CA politicians can't ban guns completely, they will work on FFLs and shooting ranges. And unfortunately many pro gunners will turn on each other in the process. I won't be part of that - I may not shop there but I won't report anything.
That's my personal take on the situation. I don't blame anyone for having a different opinion though.Comment

M8 there are gun shops everywhere, even here in the Bay Area. We've got like 6 between SJ and SF. The gun business is booming in CA.They are not anti-2A either. They are being squeezed by our anti-gun politicians out of existenceComment
