It all depends on your threat profile.

Ballistic helmets are only rated for handgun rounds and fragmentation, unless you get one of those heavy reinforcing plates bolted on.

If you aren't used to fighting in your gear, it will hinder you more than help.

That opened my eyes pretty wide & shot a ballistic helmet right to the top of my prep list, right along with body armor, a rifle, etc.

Yes, 100%, invest in a ballistic helmet.

Frankly I'd go for one of the ones that offer more full coverage vs. the ones the Secret Squirrels wear that are very minimalistic & appear to offer less coverage.... I think the added protection is worth it.

I posted this on the very first page of this thread four years ago. And I still feel the same way. You could buy a Kevlar military-style helmet IF you have the extra money for future use but are you anywhere near walking around with that on your head while you go shopping or in your house under stay at home orders at this point in time???
On the other hand a motorcycle helmet doesn't get any extra attention and you could even get one with full face coverage to hide the n95 mask you're wearing and protect your eyes, which can also be infected with a virus. So theoretically / hypothetically keeping your visor down on a full-face motorcycle mask might help you in that area, possibly.

but all those things with the military style helmet either the one uncle brought you back from Germany or your cousin brought you back from Iraq is going to make you look kind of strange.
You could even get the full face type that will protect your jaw/face/teeth to some degree.
*But if you plan to use it a lot for a motorcycle, I would buy a brand-new one and never anything that has any damage because it might be compromised from a previous accident."

The main difference between you and the military when it comes to wearing protective gear is once the gunfire starts you should be trying your best to be running the other way where the military has to go in towards the gunfire. And in that process of moving forward they need to expose their head to look out for the enemy they're trying to move toward and then that's what increases the chances getting hit in the head.
I'm not implying that you couldn't get hit in the head if you are running away or laying low behind cover and randomly shooting back as you crawl away from a shooting but the two actions of the civilian versus the military are different.


But that's just like, my opinion man.

By all means buy a military helmet if you want one. This is America and currently we're still allowed to do that type of thing.

Many posts on here saying the OP should not get the helmet for SHTF. People saying you should be the gray man out. Walking around with your AR and plate carrier will not make you a gray man out. So why not have the AR and a ballistic IIIA helmet?

This thread is 4 years old, and thoughts may have changed.

What are your thoughts now calguns? Yea or nay for helmet.

I ain't wearin' it to work, UNTIL bullets are flying. And if bullets are flying, "grey man" is probably out the widow.
