Situations are relative, and as I described above, your situation is not mine and does not apply. We DON'T need to make such laws. You DON'T need to interfere.

For anyone with kids or kids that would visit their home; yes, of course, YOUR situation dictates you need to lock up your guns. Agree.

But you are plotting a need for laws when you subscribed to the idea that everyone must follow suit. Do you know how many kids under the age of 18 get killed sneaking out with the parents' car in the middle of the night when specifically told not to do so? Hundreds to thousands.

So do you want laws that require adults to lock up their car keys at night with threat of penalty under the law? Or required to lock up medication? Or chemicals under the sink? Or dad's chainsaw?

Be very careful what you wish for...

    .
Then we are in agreement. I find the law we have here regarding storage to be adequate. And I especially like that it is posted at the gun stores I frequent.

Referencing one's own childhood is a common refrain we see in these discussion when there are those who absolutely refuse to "risk" not getting to their weapon in order to protect their children or the children of others from unsupervised access to firearms.

If it's true, I'm glad it's your favorite. I was not raised in CA. (That's clearly 99% of why right there.)

My parents, married 59 years as of this year; like them, I don't drink, don't smoke, have never done drugs (of ANY kind) never a parking ticket in my life, never a trouble with the law, never any accidents because of stupidity or arrogance, all siblings are at the top of their field in their chosen career including myself, successful in every way.

We live right and we choose responsibility as to why things happen, not that things happen by accident. Stupid still happens whether you have laws mandating people not act stupid, or not.

So yes, I was raised right, and stand by my parents as having done so.

I don't have kids. So your point is?

Responsibility lies with YOU and YOU alone. Let me spring your ideas for legislation mandating this on you in another way; we need to ban guns for fear that someone might shoot up a movie theater, or their kid might take guns to a school and shoot a bunch of kids. Let's go beyond the lock-up issue and just bans guns entirely. Problem solved.

      See how that works?

Kids shoot themselves with "hidden" guns all the time too. About 70 kids a year under 14 die because they accidentally shot themselves or were accidentally shot. If you think your kid won't play with a gun if it is in a drawer, or wont find it you are deluding yourself. Yes, it is bad parenting, but so is leaving guns around unsecured in any way, out of sight or otherwise.

              Agree too.

Just very much against laws mandating ALL guns be locked up, for EVERYONE, no matter the situation, at ALL times.

There are so many other things that government can then take that to, that I fear the day when we are back to the ability for soldiers or police to enter our homes at any time merely for the curiosity to do so. Through such laws, they are entering our homes, even if it's vicariously.

My grandkids are very gun safe, and know safe handling rules. That said, when they are visiting, all guns are secured. I'm not as concerned about needing to get to it in a hurry as I am curiosity getting the best of an 8 year old.

We just really need to avoid new laws stating otherwise (as City of Los Angeles has done) whether you have kids or not, because their motives for making such laws are not about safety, but more about control and measures to ban you from guns if such laws are broken whether the reason for those laws applies or not.

No need for the above for my HD specified guns, and yes, more than 50 years of guns in my home throughout the entire run of my lifetime including as a kid, and never once an ND or unsafe handling situation.

I never took my dad's chainsaw, drill, or mom's butcher knife, hairdryer and bathtub, the 3600 pound weapon in the driveway or anything else and did something as equally stupid with it.

Thank you for your respective thoughts, and have a nice day. All things are relative. My situation is not your situation, nor relate to the cited link, and thoughts like yours are why legislative mandates are being pushed to enforce how you store your guns in your own home.

Your opinion stops at my door step. Let's leave it that way.

First off the gun was left unattended on the kitchen table. Irresponsible by everyone's standards.

It's not that we don't think we need to be responsible about safely storing our guns, it's that politicians do not have the right to mandate to us how we store them.

The purpose of Gray Davis's mandatory gun lock purchase law had little to do with keeping children safe and a lot to do with funneling your money into his brother's companies pocket.

In fact all tragedies are preventable. The issue is how many rights and how much control we want to loose in the name of preventing tragedies.

We could prevent all auto related deaths simply by banning autos.

Where do you want to draw the line?????

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.

I have no kids, no kids come into my home. Please don't (the politicians) tell me how I have to store my guns.

If I had kids, I would store them in such a way that they were not accessible to the youngsters...But thats just me. I don't need some elitist to make a blanket law that everyone has to follow, kids or not.

I am doing a little house hunting up here in Ory-Gun at the moment. I stopped by to do a walk-thru and in two of the rooms they had stainless lever guns on good ol' fashioned gun racks on the wall, along with a few other hunting rifles.

First thought, was ... " I am finally home"

                              Love this place.

I grew up in a household where me and my 4 brothers were all hunting by age 11. We had small caliber rifles that we would hunt with almost daily in our canyons and local mountains (within bmx bicycle distance haha!).

Sometimes I think the modern sissification of our America is just plain sad.

I believe in freedom. REAL freedom. And I also believe that with real freedom comes REAL responsibility and that actions have consequences. I also believe it's not our government's job to save us from our own stupidity. Even if it means that some people and/or children will die. Because as tragic as that may be...freedom/liberty is what is ultimately in the best interest of the people.
