Geez OP, you sound like a peach to hang out with at the range.

When I'm at the range and if people take the time to come ask me to shoot my guns and chat it up, I'm all for it. Have a whirl. I don't give a dam what you brought with ya or if ya offer to let me shoot your guns.

I've met a lot of good folks like this and seen their hobby and collection blossom.

I usually offer. I think if I was asked I would say "no." But like I said I'm quick to offer if someone expresses interest. I've been on the receiving end of such courtesy and it led to one of my best rifle purchases, a CZ 455. So it's like spreading the love in my mind.

And yeah, you may have given up some free rounds to that group of twenty somethings...but you might have helped instill a lifelong passion for firearms in a demographic in which such interest is dwindling.

Last month I had a guy and his girl shooting in the bay next to mine. Guy with a new AR. He was having trouble getting the bolt to go into battery completely. Me and my brother take a look. Yep round is not going all the way into the chamber. Look at the barrel...300blk. Ammo he was using was .223.

They had no other guns to shoot. Just spent $30 each on entry. I brought over my DDm4v7 with Aimpoint. Made sure they knew how to operate it, and let him and his girl blast.

They were very appreciative, even offered a 50 round box of .223, I declined though.

Asking to shoot someone else's gun is rude.

Offering someone the opportunity to shoot your gun is a polite gesture under proper circumstances. It is especially important when an accompanied youth is at the range or maybe a non shooter or simply an admirer of your gun. But at all times, stay in control.

Not all people have rich parents to gave them a weekly allowance to buy $5000+ guns. My guns to me are worth what yours Wilson Combats are worth to you..

I would venture to say that they are worth a lot more to you, since it sounds like you had to earn your own money to buy them.

I would never allow a stranger to shoot any of my weapons. Ever.
The only thing the gun community has in common is we shoot firearms. That's it. Some are very very nice people, but you have no idea what's going on their head.

For all you know the guy next to you asks can I shoot you gun and then shoots himself or another.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I'm a paranoid Dude by nature. I would never let a stranger drive my car at the track, so why would a gun be any different.

Having said that . . .

If I'm going to a shoot with people I know, or say a group of Calgunners (Visible Abs Only) that is different situation where I may be swayed.

But for a random Dude drinking at the Range or BLM or wherever . . .NEVER gonna happen!

I always get asked to shoot my guns because I have at least one machine gun with me or something suppressed. I take my full auto AR 22 to the Fathers day free range time event and let the kids shoot it while the dads video. I give away about $60 worth of ammo and just get smiles in return.

The only gun I get nervous about letting others shoot is my open bolt STEN. Not many people understand how open bolts work and how to properly clear them when there are issues. I give them a 10 minute safety class on it and then stagger the mag capacity from 2 to 5 to 10 to 29 rounds as they get used to how it operates. It is the only machine gun I don't let my son operate without my hands on it.

The funny thing is I can have guys asking me to shoot my machine guns and if they have the cash I let them share my table since I am a lefty and just cover the ammo expense while I pull out my .22 NAA sock gun and have more fun trying to get groups with that. Everyone that tries it has fun with it and it was only $175.

Because people who want to kill themselves or other people often borrow a gun they aren't familiar with from someone rather than use the one they have at the range with them?

I get the alcohol thing, and of course that changes it for a lot of us, but if I want to kill myself I'll do it with my own gun, or a range rental. I wouldn't depend upon the generosity of a stranger.

I was at an outdoor range recently and some group of strangers 5 of them in their late 20s. One came over and asked if he can shoot my DD M4A1 w/ eotech combo. I kindly let him knowing their group only had a XD in 9mm and a cheap 22 rifle. After that one after another came over and asked the same thing. My DD was brand new and i was there to get the eotech zero in only. I saw each one put their face on the stock and regretted it immediately. They did offer their guns for me to shoot, but come on. I have my highy modified CZs with me also. I wasn't in the mood to shoot their cheap guns so I declined. Now looking forward, I will politely turn down request to shoot my guns if they don't have anything decent for me to shoot in return. So, what would u do if strangers ask to shoot yours?

Well, except for the alcohol part, I let most people shoot my firearms. However, if I see you at the range with your over priced little AR and bubba'd CZ, I will politely let you know that you have nothing interesting for me to shoot so, don't even ask me to shoot any of my 50BMGs or other precision rifles, belt feds, antiques, collectibles, etc. Sorry, what goes around, comes around. I will let young and old shooters (as long as they aren't drinking) who may only have some cheap .22lr rifle shoot my guns though.

Sounds like you got a bargain on those smiles. It reminds me of the time during the height of .22 scarcity that I gave 100 rounds of CCI to a father and son who had shown up at the range and only shot for 20 minutes before they ran out of ammo.

The gun community is pretty generous I've found. When I've had problems in the past several calgunners have offered to mail me free repair parts. So I'm happy to pass along such generosity in our sport.
