They do know, probably recorded as part of DROS, FFL has to click exemption because they can't choose a model that's not listed.

Our sheriff won't allow SSE on carry license and they check and will reject.

A local gun shop owner is telling me that the CA DOJ, by way of the CA Highway Patrol (the State Police) are cracking down on persons who purchased an off roster hand gun as a single shot exemption (SSE) and removed the SSE barrel restoring it to it's original condition.

He said that if they see you in possession of one, say on a range where they are practicing that they will confiscate the pistol and possibly open prosecution. The same goes for ARs that are home built out of an 80% lower.

Have any of you cats heard anything like this?

And that's exactly what they do - they are after all, the CHP. One call to dispatch is all they need. The OP story was about CHP coming into contact with people in posession of the firearms, and checking - so they will have the serial number. Sorry, indeed.

If it ever happened, it would've been all over the news by now. Also, CA legislature de-facto admitted the legality of SSE when they passed a bill banning it. Same applies to the home built rifles.

Any private range owner will kick the police out, if they start harassing the law-abiding customers. As you understand, folks with SSE-ed and home-built guns are serious hobbyists and good customers.

That policy wont help you on the side of the highway. And my point wasn't that this is happening, my point was that the CHP can simply and readily identify SSE pistols if they want to, when they come in contact with pistols. Let's acknowledge that simple truth, and we can get back refuting or confirming the story line in the orginal post.
