How much precaution is necessary for cleaning?

I don't mean the observation of gun safety rules, those should always be observed. This is about proper ventilation when using harsh chemicals etc. What do you normally do when you are cleaning firearms?

Lucky you. Not sure where you live in SoCal but there are too many soccer moms nearby for me to do that.

Hoppe's #9 does have a strong odor. I can see wearing gloves, and using a fan and an open window and disposing/cleaning the soaked rags outside. Some other cleaners don't have the harsh odor.

I've heard that some people suggest using Simple Green to clean guns, but I haven't heard what the experts/gunsmiths have to say about that. It doesn't have a toxic odor, but I don't know how well it removes lead and copper or what it does to your gun. I'd be interested to see what suggestions other calgunners have.

If I'm doing a more thorough cleaning I'll do it in the back yard, else I just do it in a room with an open window. I'll usually wear some rubber gloves though.

I do mine next to the back door in my room. Wife has a fit but well, don't really care haha. What's the difference to her nail polish/remover...

I use one spray of CLP on the left side, then one on the right for a quick pick me up. Then its on to cleaning the gun.

I switched to M-Pro 7 and clean them in my basement. No ventilation due to freezing temps outside right now. The guns I shoot most get a more thorough cleaning with Hoppes in the summer when I can sit out on the back deck.

If you do a shot of Hoope's #9 before you start you hardly notice the smell

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.
