Stocking up ammo

If you are going to store it for a long time and don't need access to it, I use
1Gal paint cans you can buy at HomeDepot. Put the brass in plastic bags so they do not touch the galv metal paint can walls. Add a desiccant pack and tap the lid shut. Will last a long time.

Ok, so I am trying to stock up on ammo. I'm thinking either to save up 500 or 1000 rounds per caliber. The amount depends on how I can store it and the room it takes.

I plan on never using this ammo for a long time. It's something I would like to save if SHTF.

Over the last couple of months I've done the exact same thing. I've accumulated 12,000 rounds of Sellier & Bellot (2,000 rounds in each of 6 different handgun calibers). Different calibers go on sale all the time. It's good, inexpensive, brass-cased ammo, and the small boxes are perfect for stacking for long-term storage. All 12,000 rounds fit nicely into a small metal military foot locker.

I have a lot of other ammo that I will shoot and replace, but the ammo in this foot locker is for SHTF purposes only.

For rifles, I would recommend military surplus ammo in metal ammo cans.

As I get older more and more of my ammo gets out of the 20MM ammo cans and into the 50 cal cans. Lugging those big cans of ammo just isn't fun. I need to make more trips with smaller cans

They also have a few options in brass for just $10 more per case, if you're a reloader it's cheap brass. And I'd rather buy a whole case than pay tax, govt gets enough taxes from me

Dixon Walmart had federal aluminum 9mm in stock so I ought 3 boxes. They had a few left.

When it comes to ammo, OP, you are going to get a lot of people's personal opinions. Yes, I too will offer some limited opinion but my opinion may not be the best for you. Some of the opinions that you will get on Calguns will make sense to you, some won't. Regardless, all information provided to you will be someone's opinion and may not be the best thing for you. First, it is good that you are thinking about stocking up regardless of the reasons why and for that I commend you. Start slow and be consistent is strictly the key. Don't try to buy everything today unless you feel that the time is now and you have the funds to do so. If you don't have the financial means initially, then simply buy a box or two at a time. Yes, buying by the case may be best for most, however if you can only afford a box or two then do what you can and have no worries at all. In truth, many people here on Calguns have never experienced a personal SHTF scenario where they needed thousands of rounds of ammo so very few opinions are actually based on a personal experience in any regards.

As stated above, aluminum is perfectly fine except that you can't reload it. If that does not worry you, then don't sweat it. The question about defensive (HP) versus FMJ is a personal one as to when to begin stocking up. In truth, any ammo (for SHTF) is better than no ammo and I personally am not going to worry about my weapon being loaded with HP over FMJ in a true SHTF scenario. Heck, if that actually occurs, based on what I imagine a SHFT scenario for me would entail, then all I care about is having ammo to feed my weapon. Again, it's a personal choice as to what is best for YOU, so keep that in mind and take my advice and anyone else's as being worth a grain of salt.

In any regards, remember that along with the ammo needs to come the thought of how to properly store your ammo. Think 30 or 50 caliber cans for long-term storage. Don't buy a bunch of ammo and then pay no attention towards how you store it. If you are consistent, then you will begin to accumulate a lot. Remember, based on your identified needs, you will likely accumulate 500-1,000 rounds fairly quickly if you are consistent in your purchasing habits.

if you ask my wife ammo gathering has become an illness/obsession with me and she may be right ,lol. for now alot is in original cardboard cases but the majority is in plastic waterproof ammo cans.for the past 3 years ive been buying all the ammo i can afford to and have shot very little/almost none of it. in these 3 years i have stashed about 20 grand in ammo and maybe 2 thousand more in magazines. we dont even want to talk about gun purchases lol. and i aint done stockpiling yet. think laws regulating ammo will just get worse. i guess what im trying to say is buy cheap and stack it deep.

I don't stock up for SHTF. How many rounds would I possibly need for that kind of situation. If the SHTF situation isn't over after a few magazines I'm probably dead anyway.
I stockpile for Obama, Hillary, DeLeon, our next governor Newsom, the less than favorable courts, and the next big pharm lunatic who comes out of the weeds for the Brady Bunch to use as a poster child. That's the reason one should stack it deep. Far greater threat than civil disorder or breakdown because the liberals are a constant, present and long term threat.

If you are stocked for Hillary you have enough for dozens of SHTF situations. Stocked enough for Newsom and you have enough for an extended vacation in Fallujah.

And if you're not reloading, you're doing it wrong.

OP, just a FYI don't be sucked into or duped into believing that you have to have the latest super duper kills everything in the world special ammo. Just plain jane FMJ ammo has killed more people over the last 100 years than any combination of other special stuff. T.

Yes, we used the equivalent of .380ACP ammo effectively in our pistols in the British army.

I know hollow point is better at home when you don't want it to come out the other end of the perp and hurt someone else or penetrate too many sheetrock panels. Okay, the expansion inside the body does cause a larger wound.

Right now, 9mm is about the cheapest. If you have a decent 9mm gun - e.g. Glock 17 and the like, stockpile 9mm.
Even .380ACP is at a reasonable price these days - until "they" get into power.

Seriously, though, our pea-shooters (including .44 and .357) are rather ineffective for those who want to "fight the govinment".
The "govinment" has armored trucks and something called tanks which tend to repel even your best hand-loaded 5.56.

Simply stockpile for when the anti-gun lobby and/or the new politicians drive up prices and reduce supply.
You need enough to go to the range at least regularly for a year or two with your stockpile.

I shoot 200+ rounds at each range visit (less than I did when I was a young pup). I go to the range on average twice a month, although this summer it's been twice a week, but that will end when school restarts.
So 24X200=4,800. So 5,000 rounds per year should do you well.
