    Stocking up ammo

Hopefully this is the correct section for this question.

Ok, so I am trying to stock up on ammo. I'm thinking either to save up 500 or 1000 rounds per caliber. The amount depends on how I can store it and the room it takes.

I plan on never using this ammo for a long time. It's something I would like to save if SHTF.

Now for the question; Is it a good or a bad idea to save up on aluminum cased ammo? The reason I'm asking because its cheaper than brass cased ammo.

Some things to take into consideration:
    - I don't reload
    - My local range requires I shoot brass so I don't mind buying a few hundred of those when I got shoot
    - Aluminum doesn't rust
    - Brass does tarnish, but not rust

I'd have 3K to 4K rounds per caliber at least and all in brass except for Com Block calibres such as 7.62 x 39 and 9 x 18 which I'd have in coated steel. Then keep buying new stock and use the old and replace with new.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Store it in surplus 30 or 50 caliber ammo cans and it will last forever. I can’t say for sure about the aluminum cases, but I don’t know why it wouldn’t be okay.

As far as how long it will stay good, if properly stored it will last several lifetimes,
I'm still shooting WW2 45acp ammo that my grandfather gave me.

As said above, .30 or .50 cans works just fine. You'll be able to store slightly more if you take the rounds out of the factory box, but I just leave them.

And, I like to toss in some small desiccant packs just to make sure that moisture isn't a problem. As far as amount of space goes, plan on a small closet full. That's my goal, but I keep shooting it up!
              Sorry, not sorry.

I'd get a few thousand rounds of your fav weapon saved, minimum. You won't be finding much next summer, make sure you save enough to still shoot.

Proper storage is key. I've fired off rounds from the 1920's, all did great since they were properly stored. SG Ammo is my personal favorite supplier. Buy it cheap, stack it deep.

this. the election is gonna go to the dems again. the candidates for the repubs are just terrible at the moment.

and if hillary wins, that is the doomsday scenario for gun owners so stock up now while ammo is at somewhat normal prices pre-obama (except for .22lr) and actually in stock.

If you're stacking for SHTF, why buy the cheap stuff? Be patient, quality ammo pops up now and then for very reasonable prices. If SHTF occurs (or any other life threatening situation) I want the best ammo money can buy, not tula or brown bear.

Phillps Wholesale for ammo cans. Always has plenty in stock and less than 20 per can last time I bought some it was around 15 I think give him a call.
