I am a big proponent of picking the equipment that best fits your life (your skill, your home layout, weapon etc). For me, it's just me and the fiance in a small apartment and the layout is such that if I took a shot towards the entryway/down the hall way, it would be parallel to the neighbor's wall. I'm not concerned with overpenetration as I am with making sure the bad guy goes down with as few shots possible.
    This ^ well said.

I would rather use .22lr than birdshot in a gunfight. Penetration is key for disabling a threat and birdshot simply doesn't do it.

Having said that my preferred HD gun is an 870 with 00 buck

            and more birdshot

I think we all understand that up close... bird shot works...

After hundreds of hours of video and dozens and dozens of shots on paper, I have come up with what I believe to be the best loading sequence for my 870 pump.

              Loaded as follows:

              1st Round = Buck 00
              2nd Round = Buck 00
              3rd Round = Buck 00
              4th Round = Buck 00
              5th Round = Buck 00
              6th Round = Buck 00
              7th Round = Buck 00

8th Round "Click" = I use the stock butt to beat him on the head because I must have missed with shots 1-7

I've read both sides of the debate and went with #1 buck in my 590A1.

                      can you handle buckshot? SERIOUSLY...

all these guys talk about "putting the man down" 1 shot 1 kill...fact is... when your all nervy and jumpy are you going to remember your about to pull the trigger that is going to result in some good recoil?

I love the pistol grip pumps...for when you pull the trigger knock out your front teeth, destroy your nose, render yourself unconscious and leave the intruder with a loaded slug gun and the rest of your family nervously in their beds...

every year more than a handful of hunters are killed accidentally by bird shot from more than a few feet away...

there is no question buck is the more potent killer.. its whether or not you can handle yourself in the moment...if your the only one with the gun... cool.. now think of your wife... can she?

Seems to me adrenalin would dumb down the recoil. I know it does when hunting.

I don't think the pistol grip is a good idea either. Never fired one though. No desire to.... So it's just my opinion.

I am concerned about any being effective for stopping a threat that won't go two layers of sheetrock. My hope is to stop a lethal threat in my home before they are close enough for birdshot to be effective.

I was inside a building a few rooms down once when one of our guys fired off a 00 MG buckshot shell and it was absolutely deafening, it was disorienting to the shooter as well as just being loud.

Have you shot much buckshot? Especially low recoil LE rounds?

Are you sure about the ranges in your home? I've always told people to customize what they need based upon the ranges they would face in their home. For many people bird shot is very lethal at the largest distance they would ever be using it from.
