A hell of a hole in what?

Birdshot is good at contact distance. Anything beyond that, buckshot. Bridshot does not have enough mass to go deep enough into the body past contact distance to incapacitate.

Also, the OP says "here we go again", but this video is 6 years old.

The longest shot in my home is probably over 50 ft. I do not have confidence in birdshot at 50 ft. Further, how do you know you can contain an encounter to your home?

Keeping your wits about you, having the ability to quickly ready your chosen weapon without thought, and being able to control the choking fear in a gunfight is going to matter much more than an erudite round table on terminal ballistics and internet theory.

Pick a weapon. Train with it. Learn how to shoot, move, reload, and clear malfunctions without thought. The effectiveness of your defense hinges more on that than the tool itself.

Chuck, last year I was in a 2 day defensive shotgun class with Rob Haught, who is seen as one of the absolute top defensive shotgun trainers in the country.

Also in the class was Dr. Gary Roberts, who goes as "DOCGKR" on various gun forums. He's a recognized expert on wound ballistics, and is an LEO from the Peninsula.

They both said that birdshot was a poor choice for self/home defense, and the best round for 2 legged predators was Federal Law Enforcement Flite Control LE132-1B.

              ><

I prefer "birdshot", shoot about 5-6,000 of those a year

I still have the box of OO Buck I bought in 1999 for Y2K

i have, but never on these forums do i ever hear about low recoil rounds, the conversation piece normally goes towards get the biggest baddest rhino round you can find...just like the people who say shoot a slug.

your half asleep trying to wake up, hearing people break into your house thrashing your stuff and your going to be able to pull the trigger on 12 gauge loaded heavily. I dont know, maybe I am just a wuss lol

number 6 bird shot and I dont think your gonna have a problem

Good comment . . . this is probably not the greatest choice either.

everyone has their scenarios. someone living alone in the wood might view this differently from someone whose bedroom and kids room is separated by a living room and a kitchen.

if I exit my bed room and shoot into living room or kitchen, it will most likely hit my kid's room. I load bird shots, with bucks (Federal flight control) on side saddle.

I use Turkey loads not because I'm worried about missing, but at in the house ranges buck shot might go through the bad guy and the wall.

                        What about rubber slugs?
I have #6 high brass loaded in my 930, walls are plaster and have 3 adults and 2 kids living here along with a stupid cat. Not worried about the cat so much but I have a huge fear of over penetration and hurting a family member. The layout is horrible too. I hope I never have to find out if I went with the wrong setup

The key is that no one type of round, one technique, or one weapon is right for everyone in all instances. In the end, you have to pick the weapon, caliber, round and techniques that you feel fit your skills and physical environment best.

#4 buck is the smallest for defense against humans. Your #6 is called bird shot for a reason.

I don't understand how a groggy person could let recoil affect their ability to pull a trigger. The trigger pull weight is the same regardless of what round you're shooting. My shotgun is stocked with Winchester Law Enforcement Low Recoil 00 buck. I don't anticipated being attacked by turkeys, so no #6 birdshot for me.
