The only thing slugs are good for is killing grizzly bears or punching a hole in an engine radiator. So you do not need many of them.

Add up the grizzlies that you expect to meet, and the cars you are worried about running you down, and divide that by 5 per box.

jesus christ, it's like 1/4 the price of my 1911.

What can you guys tell me about mosberg?
Why do you prefer them over remington 870s and bennellis novas? (except for the price) Can I mall ninja the mosberg 500 a little?
Mossberg offers 3 barrels and they are interchangeable, so your 1 Mossberg becomes 3 shotguns --

        - short smooth bore for self defense, assault operations, and riot control

        - long smooth bore for birds

        - long rifled for deer and elk slugs.

Agreed, only I would switch .45 ACP for the 9mm/.38.

            My Mossberg model 590 holds 8 + 1 take a look below.

However on a shotgun or a rifle I would never load the +1 into the chamber like that. It is more safe to keep your chambre empty until you are ready to shoot.

X + 1 is more appropriate for the semi-auto handguns, in which case you would always want 1 in the chambre, and also the magazine completely full. But that's different.

Ok, I wanted to give you my reasons why you "need" a shotgun.

A shotgun is the only weapon that lets you stop a riot. 15 double-ought bearings coming out of the muzzle times 8 in the magazine = potentially 120 dead bad guys, a staggering statistic in terms of riot control. Only a belt-fed machine gun can compete with this. Certainly no assault rifle could.

A shotgun is the only weapon that never misses. You only need to point it in the general direction of your target.

A shotgun can be used to obtain food, even if you are a bad shot.

Nobody is every going to mess with you if you are holding a shotgun.

And if they do, then hopefully you have already pumped a shell into the receiver, and now you are ready to shoot. They will be picking the pieces of whomever was foolish enough to get in your way off the pavement after one shell fired.

And even when you are all out of ammo, you can still use the shotgun to beat them to death with it.

Huh? The only weapon that never misses? Please provide links to the stats for that comment. In a HD situation at about 10 ft the spread is going to be at most a couple of inches so you still need to aim. There is a misconception of pointing in the general direction and you'll hit your target.

Ok I will take the shot gun and you can stand about 10 ft away.

Do you think I will miss?

Willing to be your life on this little experiment?

                  I think not.

Easy there. The claim of a firearm that never misses is dependent on the individual and training. Saying a shotgun is the only weapon that never misses is inaccurate.

Have you ever patterned your shotgun? I know my open bore at 10 yards with Buck is a little larger then a fist.

Never miss? of course you can miss. and why are you using 3" 15P 00 buck. Stay with Low Recoil 2 3/4" 00 buck. Much easier on the body, less muzzle flip, faster recovery time = faster 2nd shot on target. and much cheaper

I have 2 3/4" actually. I specifically bought the low recoil, yes. For self defense purposes that is exactly what you would want. Did it look like 3" in the photo??

Yes, I patterned it for 00, #4, and tested penetration for the slugs.

That's the first thing I did.

A shotgun is a huge stick like a baseball bat, and it is easy to point without aiming, and the muzzle blast alone is going to give someone a very bad shock.

A fist size at 10 yards as you say is considerably larger than 9mm's.

With my 18.5 inch riot barrel, my spread was an inch per yard, so 10 yards would be 10 inches, 20 yards 20 inches, etc. Quite a bit bigger than what you got.

I personally don't see how anyone can miss.
