I got it, and I'm happy with it except I will sell the Tri-Rail if any are interested.

Also Mossberg forgot to finish parts of the barrel such as where the magazine tube rings are mounted and where the XS sights are mounted.

There is just a bright stripe there where they attached the metal together.

I've been having this kind of luck with gun Companies lately.

Could have picked my Mossberg 930spx today at 445pm but I am visiting my parents in Northern Idaho till Friday, so when my plane lands at John Wayne 4pm Friday Ill be having my co-worker swing by my FFL to pick up my 930spx. Then my Kifaru Koala will be waiting for me in my room

You don't need to cut or pry.

Field strip gun

Take out the action assy/forend.

Remove the nut that holds the forend onto the action assy. You don't need the $50 tool. Just a hard piece of metal that is long and fits in the notches. I actually was having a hard time using the back end of a butter knife (it was too soft and it was just bending) so I CAREFULLY used a ROUND jawed vicegrips with very little pressure and it came right off. Don't do it that way unless you have the right Jaws and a skilled touch (like me ) though because you can easily warp the nut. I should have just looked for a bigger harder knife or some other flat hard plate that would fit in there.

Once the nut is off hold the molded part and drive out the metal tube part with a hammer and a nail set or an old screwdriver. Obviously you want to drive the metal assy in the direction the nut was preventing it from moving. There is only one place on the metal action assy. that you can put a tool on and hammer it out and it is NOT on the threaded side which is delicate.

Tape the end with masking tape if you wish, but the part you are driving is hard to see when the gun is assembled and at any rate should not get scratched with a firm steady blow (not to mention that it is a narrow place you have to put the driver and any material you put on there makes it more likely it will slip off). I did not use any material and anybody in here will tell you I am picky about finishes and unecessary scratches.

Don't cut the molding to relieve tension if you want to re-use the forend. Do not pry. These are the mistakes in the youtube vid although I concede that my forend is different I believe the guy just doesn't understand the concept of a pressed in piece. Any tabs will get out of the way and the action they are pressed on is the same (I hope) for all the modern 590 models There are no depressions for tabs. It is not glued.

Just hold the molding and find the shelf in the metal part to apply a screwdriver or nail set and Just drive the metal part out of the molding. It will come. Use a real hammer and be firm. I did this with two hands and two tools by holding the molding and the screwdriver in one hand and hammering when the alignments were perfect with the other hand. It took about ten sharp raps, each one gaining ground.

The molded forend will be undamaged and the only pressure of dissassembly should be on the metal action.

Of course the one I took off was the tri-rail version, but the part that mates to the action tube looks to be of the same exact molded design. They just added some meat to the design and picatinny mounts. The inside is the same I imagine.

Just remember, this is designed to come apart, when you see guys sawing, bending and prying, they are doing it wrong.

Databyter have you shot your black water edition yet?

I'm really torn between the black water 590a1 (just for the features not the logo) and the 930 spx for only 96 dollars more.

I know the 930 spx should be a better gun...but I'm not quite sure which one will be more fun.

I was gonna take it on Wed (yesterday) but it was too windy and as I wanted to do some longer range stuff and pistols as well I wisely put off my desert romp for a calmer day.

And now my gun will be without it's forend for a while since I am doing a trade so I'll have to wait.

I can tell you this. I am very happy with the edition.

I like the raised ghost rings and picatinny which were the main reasons I got the gun. and the speedfeed is as advertised although the recoil pad is hard rubber and is partially used to hide the shells (there are two hard cups in the recoil pad that actually accept a spring and part of the first shell you load in).

Since I KNOW I am going to want a softer recoil pad I may end up modifying the speedfeed so that it does have one at the expense of one shell per side, or I may end up trading that part as well for a stock one. (Or I might even just take those cups out of the hard rubber recoil pad and putting them in a limbsaver pad hoping that they will not get in the way of the compression of the material too much)

I can tell you that fully loaded the gun feels well balanced and in fact more balanced and good that it does empty and I think the speedfeed stock shells (4) are one of the reasons for this balance and increased handling feel.

It seems that I am trading away a lot of the reasons that the Blackwater edition is what it is, but I am not losing any value to do so since the BW edition extras are free with the gun being about the same price either way and the extras easily tradeable if you want to go back to stock.

The main thing for me was the XS sights and the top picatinny and I am happy with both. You can easily replace the front sight peg with a variety of different tips, it comes with a bright white stripe that I have not found the benefit to besides it being very bright and visable in the sight pic.

Since I shoot slugs I'l probably mount some optics in the top picatinny, a red dot perhaps. But it will not get in the way of my iron sights if I do it right and this is the benefit of this gun to me.

I don't like pistol grips on shotguns for either raised shooting or hip shooting. I find a standard stock is infinistly more comfortable with both and in the case of the Mossberg easier to reach the safety and action lever as well, so for me the SPX would have been a mistake but not necesarily for you. I just hate the ergo's of it.

As it is, I am giving a Calgunner a 1/2 off priced tri-rail and it isn't costing me anything to be generous and will pay to make the BW edition I have more suited to my needs and small hands. I may do the same with the speedfeed but I LIKE the speedfeed. I'm gonna take the gun out shooting first and see how the kick is. They weight of the gun should help alot with that I am thinking.

Overall I love the gun, it's nice looking (after I took a sharpy to the braze lines) and handles well.

By the way, ANY Mossberg you buy is going to be stiff and clunky on the action when you first get it. Break it down and CLP everything. Wipe off the excess, put it all back together and then rack the action for 20 minutes and you will like the difference.

Your new Mossberg will "break in" as you use it and this is because everything is heavy duty and designed to last and be reliable, not to work like butter out of the box. But it will become smooth over time which is better than a buttery out of the box action becoming sloppy over time (not that they all do).

I don't need to actually shoot the gun to know that it is my sweet baby. You'll like it too if you decide that you want to go this way.

Just focus on the ergo's. Those are the main differences between the two guns.

Personally I like the cob forend better on the SPX but at 25 bucks plus shipping on Amazon that is easy to change, and I'd bet that most people who buy this gun will love the nice tri-rail. I just have plans to mount a light further up by the bayonet area and no plans for a laser so that is a lot of rail (which looks pretty cool) that is not being used.

As I said I do not care for pistol grips on shotguns. And espectially on Mossbergs whose controls are better suited to be controlled without that hand placement.

The stock on the spx looks ok, and it looks like you could put any recoil pad you wanted on there without the minor issues I'm facing with mine.

That's all I can think of but don't hesitate to ask any questions I have left out.

I disagree that the SPX "should be a better gun" . It is the same gun, it just has different configuration, and frankly the edition I got has a lot more value even if you end up trading away those items that give it value to customize it to your taste. Pistol grips and synthetic stocks are fine, but they are cheap parts. With my edition you are getting a tri-rail and a speedfeed stock, for LESS. And you can sell both at a profit even after buying factory replacements (btw the factory is "sold out" so use Amazon).

p.s. I did not make a profit, because I always want to give back to the Calguns community, and the guy it looks like I am going to trade with has donated to a lot of causes that I support so that means giant discount!

I too decided I didn't like the pistol grip after holding the sg in a gun store.

Thanks for the info I'm still torn in between the two. Although its more of a back and forth in my head about pump vs semi
