for what its worth, i used to work at big 5. I knew nothing about guns then, and often they would make me work the knife and gun counter. I knew about knives but nothing about guns. I was a good bs'er so i would just read the tag and half *** answer questions. Half the managers didn't know about firearms either.

Straight from the horses mouth. Can't blame you cause at least you tried. I just wish they would actually train people.

Usually there was only one person that knew how to handle the ffl stuff, and permitted to handle the actual selling. After learning, and knowing what I know today, i'd have to say there was a lot of FUd and misinformation going on there.

Speaking of FUN, they had a cheat sheet for acceptable "proof of residencey" documents, among them was "Credit Card or Bank statement from a large bank"

Which is weird because I thought they weren't valid. A Utility Bill actually ties into the physical residence. But whatever, they took it and bank statements are an easy document, so I'm not complaining.

there are idiots everywhere. there is a gun shop frequent often and have purchased from. they hired this new kid and he just blurts out whatever. he says things like, "you need a separate background check for each rifle when you buy two at the same time." his boss corrected him immedietely. i like that shop i just don't like the new guy and he is there all the time lol

and sometimes the idiocy works out in your favor. the guy at the counter at big 5 adjusted the price on my 870 and he gave me too much back. basically he honored the posted price on the tag but didn't realize the price was the "after mail in rebate" price. he gave me all that cash back and gave me the mail in rebate to boot. got my 870 for like $280 when all was said and done. woot woot

My one and only experience buying gun-related products from Big 5 was the 90minutes it took for some braindead idiot at the very same store to fill our a DROS. Had I known it would have been this much of a pain, I would have gone somewhere else for a 10/22.

The only reason I would go there now is to pick up a hunting license. They can't seem to screw that up.

This should have been resolved as soon as the dros started.you should only need your dl and receipt to pick it up on the 10th day.If they won't release itdemand all your money back.

Well, I needed 90 days of "proof" and I had days (he counted). I just brought in 3 months of PG&E bills (printed from the internet) for the three months (7/11, 8/11 and 9/11) but he counted from the the date of the first bill. So he said, just bring in 6/11 when you pick up. So I did, and then I got some other employee who said he needed the "originals, not a printout". Since I get eBills, and I didn't know how to hand him a bag full of internet, I had to find alternate documents. Luckily, I get paper mortgage bills, but of course, I was missing the bill from 6/11. I hunted for that piece of paper until 2AM! But luckily, I could substitute a bank statement for that month.

Heres a tip, if you get a cool associate to help you, big 5 almost always honors last sales prices. I would actually offer people the last sale price even when they didn't ask. Anytime you pull up a sku, it will always show you the history of pricing, and does not require manager approval to give.

                            Yup.

It's not a gun store. It's a sporting goods store that sells guns.

The employees are mostly dealing with baseball gloves, footballs and shoes.

They're there on a management program and start off as clerks and try to rise to store and district management.

Or they're just there for a part time job.

                            Knowing that, don't expect much.

Now this would be news if it was a established gun store.

You need to satisfy both state and federal requirements. Sometimes there are overlaps in acceptable documentation, and sometimes there are not.

For example, the state of CA requires the following for a handgun purchase:

While the feds require the following for aliens for all purchases:

Why don't you ask him "where in your policy does it ask for original? if there is a policy like such, your management need to update because the world is moving forward and most people are doing their banking/bills/buying through the Internet."
