Choose whatever tickles your fancy then practice with it. Know how to clear a jam, misfire, etc... fluidly without any hesitation. You'll always get pump fans saying pumps are more reliable then a semi. You'll also get coach guns fanatics saying the same things to the pump guys. Each inherently has less moving parts then the next which would dictate that they would be more reliable. But then each then has their own disadvantages as well. The key is to learn them and use them in your favor.

Personally, I would not rely on the sound scaring anyone away. Making assumptions about an unforeseen threat is a fool hearty. 99% of the time doesn't cut it. That 1% could kill you.

Speed? You make it sound like a pump is SLOWER than an auto?

A pump will cycle as fast or as slow as YOU pump it, an auto will cycle the same speed every time.

No, really doubt it works like that. Most break ins are there for a snatch and grab. Get in get out get away. If he was going in there to kill and look for a fight I'm sure kicking in the front door would be his first choice (room clearing style)
          +1

When I was at my ccw class we watched a long video that only showed interviews from the guys who were locked up from breaking into houses ect. Everytime the question got brought up about if they knew someone in the house had a gun would you still enter the house. Every single crook said they would have skipped the house. Also they all said that the houses that had small signs in the front mentioning the house was armed they wouldn't think of going in.

They all said when they were confronted with a gun they bailed as fast as they could and were scared.

A few months ago I went pheasant hunting for the first time with my Mossberg 500. I was used to shooting fast at targets, but had never fired while under "real" stress. I was surprised at how quickly and efficiently I could get another shell in the chamber when I needed a followup shot.

my benelli m1 s90 is just as reliable as my 870 is... of course i had Rob Melhorn perform surgury on her and she'll shoot everything i throw at her (walmart bulk bird, 00, winchester ranger low-recoil slugs, etc.).
i use my 870 as my HD shotgun simply because i'd rather have the cops take that away for a few weeks/months then take my benelli if i had to use it in a self-defense incident.

Topics like this bring out so much misinformation from the internet crowd.

Mr. Obvious says "...disregard every post except this one cuz these guys clearly don't know anything. The obvious answer is BUY BOTH! Maybe a side-by-side too." Like you need a reason. Sheeesh.
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

The longer sight radius of the shotgun makes it by far the superior home defense firearm compared to a handgun.

A handgun is a secondary weapon.
