For HD reliability beats speed every time. There are some high quality semi autos, but IMHO the pump is more reliable.

I don't think I've seen a short-barrel semi. For that reason, pump has the optional shorter barrel, which is a preferred for HD.

Not sure how many hundreds of rounds have passed through my Remington 1187 but it has yet to have had any problems.

There is something special about the sound of a pump action pumping, though.

                    pump

even if theres no target in sight the sound alone is unmistakable...

                    for example...

Yup! There is nothing like the sound of a pump shotgun chambering a shell to put the fear of God into an intruder!

not really true at all, all that does is give away your position and there is a very good chance the guy breaking in has a gun himself letting him home in on you. what really scares them is the blast from a 3 inch 00 mag comming out of pure silence!

Over the years, I've shot almost every pump or auto that came by---pretty much the same story you hear---pumps are reliable and kick harder---autos are softer on the shoulder BUT can have issues and can be ammo sensitive---good luck on your choice. As for the sound of a pump being cycled, while managing a gun store about to be robbed by three gang guys, the sound of the ol' reliable 870 being racked sent those guys ON THEIR WAY!! I'm a believer!

I chose a pump (Mossberg 500) because I wanted to shoot everything from low recoil target loads to magnum buckshot and slugs. Sure, there are semis that can handle them, but I'd rather just not having to worry about the "what if" of semi-autos.

I don't have any experience with changing barrels on a semi-auto, but it only takes about 45 seconds with my Mossberg 500, which is nice.

Take a look at both, try and rent one or try one a friend owns. See what feels best for you.
