The last 22LR purchase I made was for a case of 5250 rds Federal HP's. It was $209 to my door. I doubt we'll ever see it get close to that again. When it goes on sale I buy a case. My kids love shooting & I don't want to take them to the rane with 50 rds each & leave 1/2 hour later. I want them to be able to shoot until their trigger finger is sore if they want to. I haven't bought 22LR in about 2 years.Ok so I'm new to guns and have been asking this question for a while, why is everyone hoarding/stocking up on 22 like there is no tomorrow? I mean, of all rounds to choose from why the 22? I know it's cheap but when push comes to shove, I'm sure your not gonna grab your 22 over something bigger. I personally have about 1,000 rounds and am comfortable with that amount. So tell me, why do you hoard 22?Liberals could fk up an anvilComment

If I get the chance I'd buy up a ton of .22 LR as well because I can shoot them out of a semiauto, lever action, bolt action and a revolver. Once I move into the condo I bought I won't have much money to spend on guns so shooting more .22s make sense. I am going to buy them up so I'm never short.Comment

I see a common hand signal here...
Op - it seems what was previously very inexpensive and for the large part overlooked, has become rare as hens teeth. Anticipating the well going completely dry exacerbates current and future sensation of thirst.... I know I've been feeling thirsty

I kinda suspect that the origin of the shortage of rimfire ammo could be right here in CA. No real reason to believe that the folks in the free states would feel the need to maintain ammo lifetime supplies like some do here in CA. The taxation, the restrictions, the fear that we could lose internet sales might be driving us harder to hoard then the rest of the country.Comment

I made a trip to Idaho in October to see a friend. While I was there I looked for powder, ammo, & a few other things. Same story there. Sold out of almost everything, rationing sales of components, & high prices. Just like here. This sh*t is a national epidemic.I kinda suspect that the origin of the shortage of rimfire ammo could be right here in CA. This.Do you all know how close SB53 came to making it out of Appropriations? We will undoubtedly have some sort of ridiculous and unconstitutional tax and licensing scheme within the next few years, that's all the wankers like DeLeon and Yee fantasize about day and night. The smart people have at least 5k of center fire and 20-30k of .22 in stock and the smarter people are attending our reloading clinics to become less dependent on ammo manufacturers during times of shortage. There will be shortages again, all of the calibers except .22 have made a good comeback but that can all be thrown out the window as soon as this Summer when the overlord/legislators reveal their devious ways to make us pay for ammo in newly extraordinary and torturous ways.
While we rejoiced over the last session and the bills we dodged, the criminals that run the state had/have full time staff thinking up new and devious ways to punish us. In 2014, there really is no such thing as hoarding anymore, there is just being smart and acquiring as much ammo as you can afford. It's never going to get cheaper than it is probably right now through the Summer so buying .22, even at slightly inflated prices, is smart. I paid .06 for a couple of bricks on that Cabelas deal with the wooden box over Christmas, but most of the other .22 I bought over last year was more in the .08 to .11 per round range, which seems to be the new lower end of "normal" for .22. It doesn't make sense to pay much more though when I can reload and shoot 9mm and .45 ACP as cheap as .12 or .13 per round. Too bad as I love shooting .22 though, it is probably one of the most fun calibers.
It's already starting again here in Kali, from Jan 5th:
"...Democratic lawmakers also plan to revisit some of the major issues from last year, including gun control..."
This year's 22lr prices here in Kali will probably sound cheap a couple years from now due to additional taxes and restrictions.NRA life member CRPA life memberComment

What he said. If I lived in Texas for example I would not feel compelled to have more than a years worth of ammo. No crazy anti gun law makers there.I kinda suspect that the origin of the shortage of rimfire ammo could be right here in CA. In this stupid state with the laws that will eventually pass restricting sales of ammo, a CA gun owner is a fool not to buy as much ammo money allows.Comment

That non sourced graph cuts both ways that's why I've never put much stock in them.
During the entire Clinton years .22 ammo at Wally World was $8.96/550ct
During the GW Bush days it more than doubled to $19.99 for the same bulk box.
I doubt that any of these presidents had pricing authority.
But fear and the perception of future scarcity can play hell with supply and demand.
It would seem that the present administration is the best friend the firearms industry ever had! Windfall pricing, windfall sales!Last edited by Yoteman; 01-06-2014, 3:38 PM.Comment
