Ok so I'm new to guns and have been asking this question for a while, why is everyone hoarding/stocking up on 22 like there is no tomorrow? I mean, of all rounds to choose from why the 22? I know it's cheap but when push comes to shove, I'm sure your not gonna grab your 22 over something bigger. I personally have about 1,000 rounds and am comfortable with that amount. So tell me, why do you hoard 22?

WHY are we hoarding 22lr?

I think there are a few variables that causes the .22 shortage... Firstly, Price of .22 is much cheaper to shoot and practice with and the other main reason is the popularity of the .22 AR platform. Also, people probably hoard because of fear of not being able to find .22 ammo which makes it a cyclical problem.Comment

+1 to what speedracer said. It's cheap, and when it's available it's best to get as many as you can because you won't know when you'll be able to get it again.Comment

Because it's not hard to shoot 500 rounds of 22 in a short range session.NRA Patron Member
I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.
Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.
I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.
I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.Comment

To me it seems like there is no one reason. However that doesn't mean there isn't a reason that is most popular for people to hoard. I would say the number one reason for people to hoard and stock is that its cheaper than almost any other caliber bullet out there. So its easier to buy larger quantities.
If there are more people buying larger quantities it creates a whirlpool reaction. The ammo plants cant keep up with our demand. Period. Ultimately a shortage happens which in the long run drives up prices, aka economics, blah blah blah. Well you then could ask why did people start buying more than they can shoot in one sitting. Well that's because of the damn media and the state of our political fight against gun control. You have a couple shootings here and there and some laws in the works and people think guns and ammo are going to be outlawed tomorrow. That makes people buy for the long term while its available and cheap.
For example, If you herd gas might go to $10 per gallon next week what would you do? I'm guessing you'd buy as much gas as you could hold and store. Its the same thing. No one wants to get left paying top dollar for something because of a stupid law or tax that might get passed in the future. Its not about people wanting to be prepared for dooms day when they are on their zombie hunt through urban San Diego. Its the fact that our freedom is being compromised and people are scared laws will be passed which will cost them more money in the long run.Comment

Many new .22 owners out there. I went from zero to three .22 rifles in 3 months. My two boys can plow through a brick faster than water sinks through sand. Many have bought dedicated AR uppers too to offset the costs of shooting .223. It is of my humble opinion that there are several reasons for increased demand.
1. Hoarding mentality - genuine fear of shortage, price increase, or future taxes.
2. Increase interest in entry level rifles/pistols from new gun owners in the "Great Scare of 2013".
3. The AR crowd who bought the dedicated .22 uppers or the AR style .22 rifles.
4. Cheapest ammo option for low budget shooters and there are many of us who have less discretionary income than we had in the past. Economy sucks.
5. The pissing contest crowd that has to have more than the next guy, just because.
6. Flippers, etc. I had to sell 6000 rounds due to an unexpected financial issue, but I did not gouge. In some cases I pretty much sold it for what I paid when shipping or taxes were considered.

I shoot .22lr regularly, as in weekly. I've been doing so since the 70's. I've never seen it so difficult to simply walk into a store & buy some, as in a BRICK OR TWO. I sold 5-10k rounds at decent prices about a year ago & ended up with very low stock, I wont do it again. I don't consider myself a hoarder, not even close. As far as the "we" statements, speak for yourself please.Last edited by SB1964; 01-05-2014, 3:58 AM.Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!Comment
