$100 a box!? Give me a GD break. I bought several boxes of that from Cabela's last month for $13.99 each.

hobbies are becoming more of a luxury, where as; you could have had multiple in the past, now you can only have a couple.
I'm beginning to wonder if after this latest panic, we may reach the point at which there will no longer be such thing as cheap .22 ammo.
1. All that money printed the last 5 years is showing up as inflation.
2. Demand on brass, lead, chemicals is high.
3. Margins on entry level plinking .22 ammo has always been tight.
I will not be surprised if all the brand name manufacturers cut out production of a few of their cheapest ammo offerings - bring the prices up a dollar per 50 on average. The day of 19.99 325 ct. cans may go away for good after this panic.
Cheap ammo will be the territory of no-name companies that come and go by the dozen for lack of solid year-to-year profit.
Let's hope I'm wrong...
=8-)its better to be judged by twelve, than to be carried by six.

read on a blog today that someone went into a Cabela's and asked why there is NO .22 ammo available anywhere. People at Cabela's said that the manufacturers aren't even shipping them.
In 3 months we have had a shortage in most popular calibers and yet you see nothing being sent to retailers.
Does anyone know if there may be any truth to this?
It's hard to believe that they would do this just for the "supply and demand" theory. They know that there is a lot at stake when it comes to supporting the Second Amendment.Comment

I own a neighborhood hardware store and we sell ammo. We are finding plenty of ammo available, but it is a lot more work and expense to bring it in the store. Before the panic, I used our hardware coop and a major sporting goods distributor as our suppliers. We would place an order about once a month and get nearly everything we wanted in almost any quantity at a fair price and with free freight. Now they have almost nothing. We are paying 2.5 to 3 times as much as we were a few months ago and I have to use about 20 suppliers. That means I don't get the free freight anymore. That alone adds 8 to 15% and I have to work to find a large enough order with each supplier, that they have in stock, to keep the freight costs down to those levels.
I called and spoke with one of the top people at our distributor to find out what is happening. He said that at their regular end of the year dealer show, they wrote four times the volume of ammo orders that they had done in ammo sales in all of 2012. When they went to place those orders, the ammo manufacturers told them that they had already sold out all of the 2013 production (at maximum production volume) and well into 2014. With people stocking up and to supply all of the new gun purchasers, the manufacturers cannot keep up. Our contact told me that this is much worse than the last two panics (2008 and ?). He would not be surprised if this shortage was the new normal for at least a year or more. It will take them that long just to fulfill all of the orders they got in December much less since then.
I guess I should be happy just to be able keep our store stocked even if the prices are so much higher.
