Why Mosins?

I am trying to understand why a lot of people likes Mosins...

I am not trying to flame or talk crap about em, but what's the big deal with em? It is price? Cheap ammo?

Easy to modify?





Just curious...

Cheap, I can go walking through the woods and if I fall down and scratch the finish I wont worry about it.

Ok accuracy, with a brass stacker scope mount and a cheap pistol scope I can get a 1.5 inch group at 100 yards with dirt cheap surplus ammo.

LOTS of bang for the buck, lots of history to go with them for BS sessions at the range, and then get an M39. Once you have a Finn, you will get it

the M44 is just awesome....nothing like the fireball that it creates...its pretty awesome.... and the sound....its cheap, reliable, plus if you can line up 6-10 zombies you can probably take all of them out with one shot

There are even some Soviet rifles that will do sub-MOA, not just the Finns. Mine is an example of this type.

I got very fortunate and in my searches, found a Soviet Ishevsk rifle (converted Dragoon) that actually passed the ".308 Winchester" test. Good sign there. The rifling was very sharp and well preserved, no visible rust whatsoever, and the gun looked like it was hardly used at all. Slugging the bore resulted in a measurement of 0.309". All good signs. Later, I had someone who actually knows how to shoot well try out this rifle with some Prvi Partizan reloadable ammo, and sure enough, it was just under an inch at 100yd. With iron sights. Yep, it was high by a good 8 inches, since there was no bayonet mounted, but the group was tight. This is with a totally, bone-stock rifle, no mods whatsoever.

The M91/30 and its Finnish brethren are actually effective out to as far as 800 yards if the shooter does his part. The M44 Carbine gets a little less velocity due to the shorter barrel, but it ain't nothin' to sneeze at, either.

I think the biggest appeal of the Mosin-Nagant could be summed up this way"

As others have said, you get good precision from a sub-$100 rifle, and milsurp ammo is cheap and plentiful (for now). The 7.62x54R round is used in Europe to hunt everything up to and including moose and brown bears. It is about mid-way in power between the .308 Win and the .30-06, so it ain't a wimp by any stretch.

Goodness...given all that, what's *not* to like?

Where else can you buy a full size centerfire battle rifle for $109?

Ammo is cheaper than 30/06 or 308 Nato...

While not providing 1/4 MOA groups at 100.. Most are close enough to be fun to shoot.

And if it gets scratched who cares?

Put a butt pad and scout scope on one and call it done... Enjoy...

I originally typed everyone... but I know everyone would have been the wrong word. I am thinking of buying one and modifying it for some hunting. Has anyone sporterized one before? Pictures?

If you are planning on 'Bubba'ing' (sporterizing) a Mosin Nagant...PLEASE, go down to Big 5 or something and get a cheap, refurbished Izhevsk or something like that of little COLLECTOR'S value...Bubba THAT rifle...NOT a collectible one!!...

...just my two cents!!...(I own 13 Mosin Nagants from 5 countries, 11 of them are collectible, and I wouldn't Bubba ANY of them!!...)

Here are my first dozen Mosins representing a half a dozen different countries in several different wars from WWI thru the Cold War!!...

...THIS is why I, personally collect Mosin Nagants...TONS of military history background, fun to shoot, cheap and plentiful ammo...'nuff said!!...
