    Thinking about ordering a .....

Thinking about ordering an M1 Garand from the CMP. Not much choices, I know I'm late to the game. I know that what they have are not high grade guns and I'm ok with that.

Question is which of the 2 should I order?

    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

My concern with the service grade, since it it may be a mix master, is that the metal finish may not be all the same color.
I generally would want a original, slightly worn rifle, or the refinished one.
Perhaps you could contact them for more info?

FYI that CMP Special is a rack grade special. I would go for a service grade, personally. Whatever you choose, make sure to read the descriptions thoroughly.

$650 for a shooter Garand isn't bad if you can't afford the extra $100. But I'd suggest going for the Service Grade if you can.

                  For CMP Luck-of-the-Draw...?

                  The Answer is:
Order the CMP Service Grade M1 Rifle.

                  The Smart Answer is:
Order Two(2) CMP Service Grade M1 Rifles - and cast off(sell) the one that doesn't sing to you.

                  The Really Smart Answer is:
Order Three(3) CMP Service Grade M1 Rifles - and cast off the two that don't sing to you.

Garandimal, gotta go with your answer on that. Money can always be replenished. The M1 Garand supply, however, cannot.

                    My answer:

1.) Special grade, especially if you can get into the CMP's Advanced Maintenance Class and build your own. But even if you can't get into the AMC, you'll get a very good shooter, a totally refurbished, real M1 Garand. Hard to beat that.

2.) Service grade. Keeps the original barrel and isn't really refurbished, but still in pretty good condition. This is perhaps the best "bang for the buck".

3.) Field grade or even Rack grade, and count on replacing the barrel with a new Criterion barrel from the CMP. This will make a pretty good shooter rifle. Finish-chambering a Garand is surprisingly easy if you have the vice, etc. Any decent gunsmith would make short work of this.

Those who say M1 Garands with new barrels don't have history, perhaps don't understand that barrels are wear items and that barrel replacements happen on all rifles, not just M1's. The history is in the receiver and the other, non-wear parts. As long as you get the barrel from the CMP and keep the receipt, there's your authenticity.

                      Even the "rough" Service Grades...

                      ... can be sweet.

                      This one is a Six-Digit (Spring '42) w/ a '44 replacement Bbl. that gauges ME=1 TE=3.

Not to take over the thread, but can someone give me a quick rundown on how the ordering process works for CA residents? Do I need to get an FFL's info and fax it to CMP so they can ship it to them? Does the FFL typically charge their normal transfer fee for this work?

Service grade, you are buying a barrel. Every part can be changed by you, if needed.

                              Short answer - Yes.
