It is a NFA Destructive Device, so you have to do the Form 4 deal, and you need a CADOJ permit to own it.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

If I get my grandma to go through all the steps and she gets one, can she leave it to me when she passes?

If you grandma lives in a DD-friendly state, Yes, she could get one. She could leave it to you in her will/trust, but you wouldn't be able to bring it into CA unless you got the CADOJ DD permit. IIRC, the ATF has allowed for in cases like your theoritical situation, for the recipient to store the item out of state in a legal location, such as a bank deposit box, or at another person's location in a safe in which only the recipient has the key/combo to.

If I make it into a single shot pistol, would it be exempt from the drop test?

I think the Croatians or one of those Yugo type people had made guns like this, I want one!

And of course there is the Lathi 20mm, sold at one time in the USA.

The beauty of the 20mm is you can get a sufficient amount of incendiary or HE in the projectile to make a difference downrange. As good as the .50 is, there's only so much you can do with it projo enhancement-wise.

In reality, for the unwashed civilian market, the 20 isn't in any way practical - DD, the good ammo is DD classified, and even rolling your own solids would put a crimp in anyone's bank book.

The .50 is enough for me, I don't look at the 20mm as a must-have or even as a wouldn't-it-be-nice piece.

The base model take down 20mm is $6800

The single shot one is $9800

The base model mag fed one is $11,900

The version with the massive bipod and freefloated handguards is $13,000

Then there is a custom sound suppressor avail for a quick $3200.

They have 49" barrels and weigh between 39lbs (single shot) up to specially weighted versions of 100+lbs to soak up recoil.

The whole thing is a ridiculous, just-because-I-can kind of toy. I would love to play around with something like that, but even if I got the gun (it may be rifled, but this thing qualifies as a friggin' gun)for free, it is $8-$15 per trigger pull.

Here it is next to a 26" barrelled .50 for scale
