Why does my 700 rust like a pig?!

For those who experienced rust with either rifles or shotguns, was it just on the outside or did the bore get hit too?

Bore was fine, surfave rust was exterior surfaces only.

Thanks, I was wondering if the more maintenance-free solution was something like cerakote or something like nitriding.

My 700 AAC -SD hasn't rusted either. Last shot it in the rain last October.
However Remington has put a recall on it due to a possible trigger defect.
My SN tested positive.
Can anybody verify the recall? I haven't called yet.

Do the SPS Tacticals have a different finish than the 700P/LTRs?

Yes.
The SPS finish is black oxide over a coarse sandblast.
Its extremely bad at rust prevention.
700p or LTR will be parkerized which is a really good finish to defend against rust as it holds oil really well.

Interesting, I would've guessed it had some other kind of finish... the other guns I have that are parkerized have a much more grey/olive/tan hue, but my LTR is VERY black. Good to know, I've had excellent experiences in the past with parkerized guns' corrosion resistance but the Remington website just says it's a "matte black" finish. Thanks for the info

You can black oxide after park to make it really black and then you have the advantage of the park holding oil and the black oxide making it blacker.

The SPS finish is just black oxide without park though so it does not do much for rust prevention.

Just a thought: If all your blued guns are rusting more or less, you might need a dehumidifier or more frequent oil wipedowns. However, if only your Remingtons are rusting, maybe there are residual salts from the factory. Try to clean the barreled action with hot water and detergent, then quickly dry with hair dryer. Once completely dry, reoil everything. The entire process should be done together to avoid flash rusting.

G96. It's hard to find in CA, but you can order it online. I've used it for 20years and have found nothing better. I use it on my shotguns and rifles that are blued. Follow the directions and you'll be set even hunting in rain and snow!

Don't own the SPS, but my old blued 700's never had that problem. Must be cost saving measures by Rem.

Exactly the 700 I got for Fathers Day 1985 looks mint and it has taken elk, deer and wild boar.

I have an sps varmit with no rust issues. I use frog lube on the outside. Frog lube does seem to work well as a preserver.

Frog lube does amazing work, I was skeptical because I just thought it was some AR-15 fanboi lube that was used because of military stories.

You should ditch the desiccant packs and get a dehumidifier rod.

So it just needs a new stock, a new trigger and a paint job out of the box, that's all.

Optics and rings too since they don't come with any irons.

That recall is old news. I'd just get a Timney.
