When nothing else works; consider washing it with water and windex and then reoiling. If it has corrosive salts on it from somewhere; oil might not stop it.

Then look at where they might have come from. If your not shooting anything corrosive; then was it around a place where it could have picked something up? I had some corrosion on my mosin bolt but I don't shoot corrosive. I figured it must have rubbed on at the range from someone who did.

It has alkali which is every bit as toxic as acid.
You get desert dust on your hands (not sand, the fine dust in the air on windy days...and it's always windy in the desert) and then sweat, presto, liquid alkali.

Next trip to the desert take a PH tester of some sort and measure your hands after a hot day.

Until you neutralize the alkaloid it will continue to eat at any firearm, stainless or carbon steel
Oil and cleaning will not help.
Read up on PH/alkaloids/acids effects and cures.
My 870 has never seen the desert. It's the crappy finish, not some mysterious chemical reaction affecting one region.

SPS tacticals are really lacking. I'd just get the SPS Varmint if you want to shoot the factory barrel (the .308 5r is the only model that comes with an acceptable barrel, IMO). The tacticool, just throw away the barrel and put on something decent.

I have a Remington whiffle bat that I sometimes use as a mallet, well, that cracked. It's so friggin cheap that it has packing foam on the inside. I thought they'd at least have a molded plastic frame, but no, cheap packing foam. I can still use the other side of the mallet until that brakes.

Can I have that buttstock pad? I cut mine up and would like to replace it lol.

Try putting the gun in a gun sock or vapor barrier bag.

I cerakoted mines because I noticed the barrel and action get surface rust every time I touch it. I should check my bore, your story has me worried. Haven't shot mines in about 6 months.

You are near the beach, it's a tough environment. Get a heater and take out the silica packs they are saturated.

Don't own the SPS, but my old blued 700's never had that problem. Must be cost saving measures by Rem.
Remington using cost saving measures? Impossible! Just look at the extravagant workmanship they put into those flawless Marlins.

Without the butt pad, I don't think I will have enough support for the plastic mallet. But, what the heck--I have actual mallets, it's just the Remington mallet is longer and provides more leverage. Since one side is broken, it's lost half its life and all of its resale value. PM your address and I'll send it to you if you want it.

Have you tried those little packet things that suck the moisture out of the air? I keep a few in the safe and or bags where my guns are stored... though not positive they do anything...

I have a de-humidifier in my safe, no rust. I have a 700P, 870 Express and Rem Model Six with no rust. I don't live in a coastal area either.

I live by the beach and even with the large electronic silica packs, surface rust is an issue. After cleaning and before putting in the safe, lightly coat metal parts with clp. Rust problem solved.

I live 200 yards from the beach and the only guns I own that have any rust are Remington's. Got a safe with a golden rod dehumidifier too. My 870 looks so bad a guy in the field asked if it was a family heirloom. It's two years old.
