Why does my 700 rust like a pig?!

Does anyone else have a rust issue with their 700? SPS tacticals to be more exact?

Before I start let me start by saying I LOVE my 700. Everything about it, accept for the finish and rust issue ... Since the day I got it, if I look at the dam thing wrong it starts to rust. If I take it or touch it in the safe a week later you can see my exact finger prints.

Well last night, I pulled it out to get ready for a shoot.. Didn't clean it from the last shoot (about 3 months ago) but rubbed the exterior of oil. Mind you I only shot maybe all of 30 rounds.

Look down the bore, fouling mixed in with a farm of rust, and I mean rust almost pitting rust. I grab my cleaning supplies and go to work.

Pours out rust and fouling. Luckily I got rid of most if not all of the rust. Bore is clean, it there is some chunks from either minor putting or left over cloth or fouling. But the brown is gone. I was pissed off to say the least. Patches were just covered in rust brown.

Does anyone else have an issue with their 700 rusting like crazy?

I have a SPS tactical, safe with moisture packs inside. None of my guns but my 870 (not as bad) and my 2009 700 have rust issues. This 700 is a rust magnet.

I had the same exact issue with my SPS tactical. No matter what I did, it always bled rust.I swear Remington uses a spray on finish. I found it to offer no to little protection. I always kept it oiled and it still bled rust. What a pos.

Try Bore Stores or any other silicone impregnated gun sock. Midway brand is nice also. If you live near the beach, extra care must be taken, since salt is also in the air.

Don't own the SPS, but my old blued 700's never had that problem. Must be cost saving measures by Rem.

What oil are you using to preserve the chamber and bore? I use Butch's gun oil and no rust problems...

Was using a spray of Rem oil...

But now I'm trying eezox. And yea I live about 2 miles from the beach, but if it was a humidity issue why is my 870 and 700 the only guns that rust on me? Common denominator has me starting to raise my finger a little.

I mean I get a spot or 2 here and there in my AK or 500, but never to the extent of these 2

My 870 is my only gun that rusts. It will rust if you just look at it. Don't even think about actually handling it. My 700 has light rust issues. Remington has got some issues to fix.

                  High Carbon Steel

I know to make shotguns compliant with stainless steeo shot they went to putting more carbon in the steel.

Perhaps Remington has done something similar to stiffen the SPS barrel?

A long term solution would be to melonite coat all the interior parts and interior of the barrel. Cerakote the exterior parts and exterior barrel.

Havent had any bore issues, but the exterior rusts if I just think about it. I took it to the range last Thursday, didnt clean it until last night, but the bolt knob and around the ejection port (everywhere I touched it) was covered in surface rust already. I guess that means I will be painting it sooner than I had anticipated.

                        I HATE rust.

Whenever possible I buy guns made from stainless steel.

A good preventive/cleaning product is Kroil. It gets into the microscopic "pores" in the steel under the rust or carbon.

It smells awful but really works. Never tried Eezox but heard good things and saw a comparative test where it prevented surface rust betr than the others tested. But they did not include Kroil in said test.

Coastal weather really does cause this corrosion faster than drier climes.

Try using olive oil or cooking oil. I use it on my BP guns and when using corrosive ammo in Mosins and Mausers, no rust but I don't wait three months to use it.
