.30-30, am I missing something?

I've been kicking around the idea of making up some cast gallery loads. I don't cast, but cast bullets are cheap and Red Dot is cheap and easy to find. Similar to the 'universial load' I've seen a few recipes Red Dot and cast bullets at 1600 fps or so IIRC. A little Red Dot and a light cast bullet would be a fine small game load too I would think.

6.0 grains of Red Dot under a 159 grain lead round nose plain base boolit, all loaded in a 30-30 case with a large rifle primer, will fly out the other end of my 30-30 Winchester at 1116 fps. I can nail a 12" steel plate over and over at 100 yards with that bunny fart load. Oh yea........it costs me 4 bucks or so to cast and load a hundred of those rounds.

The 170 grain jacketed bullets over a full load of 4895 are pretty stout, but still probably not as bad as a full power load from my Winchester 54 rifle chambered in 30-06.

Ha ha that is my load with plated 150s. Accurate and low recoil. I have taken rabbits and squirrels with it. I should find a good mold and do these up myself but I don't want to mess with gas checks

I got 2 - 30-30 Marlins. One I bought back in the early 90's and the one my dad bought in the 60's. I've used both for hunting and found them to be great bush guns.

Lever Guns are the real Zombie Killers. I own several, 1898 Win 94 Rifle, 1946 Win 94 Carbine both 30 WCF, Marlin 39A 1956 and Marlin 1894 357 1984 (pre crossbolt) Luv them all! Want more.

So, I don't know a whole lot about cast loads, but at 1100 or 1200 fps, couldn't you use a plain bullet without a gas check?

I am running my 30-30 cast boolits without gas checks, at 1116 fps. It is a plain base mold. The velocity is so slow that they don't lead the barrel.

Yeah...people are like what the heck, when a big old 30-06 chuck of brass flies out of my bolt gun and they only hear a pop from the 13.0 grains of red dot and the 150 grain jacketed bullet (1400 fps).



I loaded the 30-06 with 150 jacketed bullets and trail boss and got 1200 fps. It was very tame. I have a bunch of red dot so I use that now. I save the Trail Boss for my light 460 Mag loads. I run a cast 270 grain hollow point plain base out of my x frame xvr at around 1,000 fps with trail boss. It is fun to shoot double action with it and I never get tired from the light recoil, but the weight of the gun eventually gets me.

The only down side to my trail boss and A5744 loads in the 460 is the soot. I have to clean the gun with stainless polish after each day out as it gets covered in black soot. Gun cleaner doesn't remove it, but a few minutes with liquid polish cleans it right up, of course I have spent hours polishing it, so now it really has a shine rather than the brushed finish. I like it.

You should see people's eyes when the see an x frame and run for cover, because they "know" there will be a big boom, and then they hear a little pop from a 45 colt load or 460 with trail boss. Then I throw in some 300 grain xtp mags with a buttload of win 296 behind them and give them what they were expecting, when they least expect it

My dad bought a pair of Winchester .30-.30 back in 1978. I kept one and sent the second to my nephew so he would have one of his grandfathers guns. Unfortunately he was only 1 when my dad passed away. These are fun rifles for sure.

And unless you are like that douche on NPR's 'perspectives' (and you are on calguns, so you are not.) who destroyed his father's 20ga single shot so that "his son won't be a part of this wave of gun violence sweeping the nation", then when you instill American Values into your son, he will be passing his GREAT-GRANDFATHER'S 30-30's to his own sons. How amazing would that be.
