Marlin 336 laminate checkered stock at big5 $499. Looks pretty good.

Here is my cool lever gun.
Not going to shoot this one.

I enjoy occasionally shooting it for all sorts of reasons and, as I said, I keep going back and forth about whether I'll take it hunting some day.

That being said, why the sudden resurgence in .30-30 popularity? Ammo is scarce and people are apparently hoarding lever evolution like it's dragon gold. What's the deal?

Is it just that people are frightened that their ARs might get taken away and in searching for a 'high' capacity middle weight cartridge and gun to replace it are flocking to the .30-30 lever guns? I would have thought the .44s and .357s would have been a better fit.
I seriously doubt AR shooters are flocking from a fairly cheap round to a much more expensive caliber. However, my 336 is a sh** ton of fun and I just ordered a bunch more ammo.

The lever gun as a whole, especially chambered in 30-30 win, is a formidable weapon.

Starting with legislation, it doesn't look scary (not black(except for that tacticool thing, which still doesn't look scary, but rather like it is trying too hard)), which means it is much more political friendly.

It doesn't raise nearly as many flags with law enforcement.

Most rifles have short barrels and are compact and light, meaning they are easier to handle. This also allows for the possibility of home defense. The 30-30 will take down any two legged creatures. However, it is limited to ranch or rural communities, as a miss, or even a light hit, can pass through the wall and continue on into the neighbors house (not good). On the upside though, if it were to be used for self defense, liability is diminished, again, its not a big black scary murder's gun, but rather a family heirloom.

It is accurate and very cheap to reload for. Reloading allows many options, from cheap, low recoil plinking to hardcore hunting rounds.

While it's fire rate might be slightly lower than that of an AR, it has an outstanding time on target time and follow up shot time. The accuracy of the follow up shots often surpasses that of a semi auto for the simple reason that chambering a new round forces the shooter to once again find the target and aim, lessening the chance of the whiskey finger follow up shot. However, this is all dependent on the level of time spent training and firing the gun.

Obviously no one gun can do everything. Lever guns have limited range and long reload times (though reloading can be done with the weapon still ready to fire). But in general, a lever gun in 30-30 is a fun, accurate, reliable hunting, target, and plinking rifle. Its awfully hard to beat, especially for the price.

One story he told my grandpa was that he shot a deer in the Hollister hills and for some reason set the rifle down to go get the deer. well he got turned around and couldnt find the rifle. he spent the rest of the day walking around till he finally found it. It is in my safe, oiled and ready for action.

30-30s are simply badass guns. I have a older rare model Marlin 336 with a 24 inch barrel. Produced in the 70s, really nice rifle. Have not shot it for a long time, my ARs get all the attention these days.

I don't have a 30.30 in lever action but do have a T/C Encore in 30.30 Ackley Improved - 1" bull barrel, 27" tube. Being able to use hollow point, AMax & VMax, really shows how well the 30.30 can do on accuracy. When fireforming the 30.30 to AI I didn't expect too much but the rifle shot one hole clusters at 100 yds with the Sierra 125 BTHP MK.

I still consider the AI version a "30.30" - just with a few more fps. I'm very happy with it.

Every American household should have a lever action 30/30. It is capable of almost anything. Short, light, flat sided. Just plain cool too.

                            I have a Winchester 94, serial number 1921.

It's amazing, in patina, wear, and it shoots straight, and the hunting stories that go with it, and admonishment to never use it for bear.

I have a Winchester 94 in .30-30 and would not have a problem taking a bear with it. Of course, distance and shot placement would be key.

This beauty, 1951 vintage, just joined my family. I have wanted one since I was a kid, waiting on ammo to arrive so I can break it in.
