I finally got to the range with the shortened Marlin 336 .30-30 and a Rossi M92 that I put an older Pro Point red dot sight on. The red dot made it easy to shoot well, though it was way off initially. It took about 10 shots to get it zeroed. The Marlin with a new Lyman peep sight was pretty close at 25 yards with no adjustments. It was high at 50 yards but was easily corrected. They both shot about an inch at 50 yards, which is probably as well as I am going to do. The Marlin is from the 1950s, a waffle top with pre-Microgroove rifling.☕ 1Comment

Thanks Killer Bee! We'll see what we can do. Nice knife Bob. Anza knives are what got me making sheaths for knives which led me to making knives which is too long a story even for Killer Bee. Did have a large animal Vet in KS send me a RMEF knife to make him a sheath for. The knife was made by Browning. On his letterhead he had a quote. We liked it so much we wrote it out on a piece of paper and have stuck up here on the desk: "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid broadside, throughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming: Wow! What a ride!" We always ask the customer how much the knife is worth for insurance purposes sending it back when we make a custom sheath for them. He ordered a sheath that was three times what the knife cost! I've seen this many times and it always seems a lil odd to me. But I guess a guy likes what he likes and there it is. The RMEF knife (it had their logo on the other side of the blade):
Its new sheath:
Big run again this past year on rifle scabbards for lever actions. I think I did eight for Christmas presents. Speaking of lever actions. We were down the hill in Bakersfield a couple of weeks back and had some time to kill. We stopped at a new gun store across the street from Turners. First it was packed. We had to make a lap around the parking lot to get a place to park when someone else left, all the spots were taken. Second, as the parking lot would lead you to believe the store was packed and it was VERY well stocked! Third, it had a whole rack of lever actions and even up above on the wall that rack of lever actions a Chiappa Mare's Leg! Fourth, Fernando came over and helped us as Nichole wanted to see the mare's leg. If he's any indication of the training and quality of the other staff and there were lots of them, this store will continue booming! Man she loved that Mare's Leg and fit and finish on the piece was exquisite as was the case hardening. Price tag was steep but I told here she could get it but she didn't commit. She has several times mentioned that she should have got it, since. Fernando even spun the mare's leg prior to handing it to Nichole. He was also eager to show me all the levers they had. Now they did have several of the black rifle lever type which don't float my boat. They had the new Smith and Wesson ones as well as a couple of wood stocked ones. He felt they were the finest levers being made right now. The wood one was very nice bout $200 less than the Mare's Leg. Anyhoo we didn't buy anything but if you are in the hood check out their selection of levers.

They used to give away a knife to everyone that bought a meal/membership for the fundraiser.
About 8 years ago the accountants took over and stopped the tradition of including a knife.
I've got one similar to the one shown above.
Dave, the sheath you made is spectacular.

31 days later...
It's been one month since the most recent post by Killer Bee...
I hope we're back! The calguns site, here, seems to be working normally and for the first time since the jump to this goofy new interface software (the forum look).
Need to get out and get some shootin' in. Been a long time since I've discharged a round from any of my levers.
In other news...
Some here may view the following image as absolute sacrilege. I get it.
But if you knew what I went through to "rescue" this 1894SBL .44 Mag-chambered Remington-Marlin abomination, the work I personally put into it, then the barrel examination/consultation with Randall, then I pressure-lapped it, that it's now a good shooter, gives me the prerogative to select it as the perfect candidate for the experiment using Magpul plastic furniture. It may not look like much but it sure is handy. I certainly did keep the original birch laminate furniture.

I've been wondering where in the down-timber you'd gotten off to, Mr. Apples. It's good to see you here!
Interesting rifle. I hope it's a good shooter for you.
Yeah, CG still has issues, but it appears to be getting better. I just wish Kes would give us an update on the present and the future of CG.
I hope all's well with MLC!

Preston!
I couldn't ever really get completely logged in these last four or five months, if not longer...
Hope all is well with you. I know I've said this ten times already but I will be travelling up your way at some point in the near future. There are a herd of tin cans we need to punch holes in.
Now I go check the "Message Center" which has been almost entirely unresponsive here. yeeesh.
[Edit: Yep, unresponsive. Last PM from November 2024 won't even open]
Back later! Cheers.Last edited by 200Apples; 04-29-2025, 10:33 AM..

I seem to still have problems getting on during the late afternoon, evenings and weekends. On weekdays, morning or early afternoon, it seems to be fine. I went to the range last week to shoot some handguns. CZ75B (carry and nightstand gun,) .45 Colt Mountain Gun, Model 29, Model 19, Model 15 and my .45 Commander. Other than the CZ, everything reminded me that I need to spend more time shooting and less time reloading. I need to haul my steel targets out to the desert before it gets too hot. Other than next Sunday and Monday, the forecast is for the 70s to low 80s. I just need someone else to go, as it is much more fun (and safe) to have company.Comment

This is the first time I'vs been able to log on here in long while. Well, I'm a Grandpa now, daughter-in-law just had a baby boy. The spoiling starts! Drove by our shooting spot on my way to Bishop this week. Still looks good.
Hopefully this post will make it thru. More later.

It took me two days to get back on here. Sorry, but, this site just isn't working. Fellas, if you want to get a hold of me, I'm on "TheHighRoad" forums, usually in the Handloading sub-forums.
Handle is .45Coltguy.

My son bagged a Barrett MK22 in .338 Norma at a super, ridiculously low price from a friend. I have what I need to load him up some rounds with a 270 gr Hornady ELD bullet. The Marines are using these, as is the Navy. The Army has ordered them. Effective range (if you can shoot that well!) is 1700 meters. It is also somewhat modular so you can change calibers easily. .7.62/.308 and .300 Mag are available.

I had a good time today at Burro Canyon. My friend, Frank, rented a private range and had 4 of his fellow professors come shoot and invited me, as well. They had varying degrees of experience - one had a nice tricked out .308, another had a a Colt Woodsman target model, a .30 carbine Blackhawk and an old Winchester .22 pump with a tang sight, a third less experienced prof had a small Ruger .38 SPL snubby while the 4th was more of a newbie. Mark, the newbie, took right to the lever guns and single action revolvers. That was all he wanted to shoot. He shoot Franks engraved Uberti .45 Colt Cattleman, though it shot very high for him. I gave him some ammo with lighter bullets and he was shooting much better. I handed him my non-engraved Cattleman and he proceeded to shoot 2-3 inch groups at 25 yards. "It's not as pretty but it shoots better" was his remark. He was hitting bowling pins at 100 yards with the .45 Colt and .44 Mag lever guns about 50% of his shots. He also shot my Ruger Flattop .45 convertible with the .45 ACP cylinder and loved it. He did not do as well with the old model Blackhawk in .357 mg.
The man with the little snubby was frustrated until I handed him my S&W Combat Masterpiece. He shot close to 100 rounds and raved about the gun. He shot the .45 Ruger and hit the 2 inch red bullseye on his second shot...he was like a little kid, he was so excited.
The guy with the .308 spent more time tinkering with his set up than shooting and I don't recall him shooting any of the other guns too much. I really didn't shoot much myself, as I was having too much fun helping the other guys and saying, "Here - try this one!" Frank and I both neglected to bring our .45-70s. I did plink offhand with m son's old Henry Youth Model .22. It is a bit battered from miles in the rack on his ATV at our club property off the 133 Hwy, but it shot fine with a box of mixed .22 LR ammo. It was fun just using that up.Comment
