Marlin with 18" barrel here. Well balanced carbine. My fave "camp gun". In contrast to the 45 Colt with 16" barrel which is not as well balanced.

Frankly, i'm surprised. I bought "gunstock 231" stain/finish at Homedepot.
With sandpaper removed all old finish to bare wood, stained with two layers of the stain. Then finished it with 7-8 layers fo hand-rubbed Tru-Oil gunstock finish (prohibited in CA, so buy it on eBay, they do not know).
If interested i can post some pix of finished product.

Here are some. I's been 6-7 years and 100s and 100s of rounds, was bitten up on many pig hunts range and camping trips so many scratches and what not. I think the finish held perfectly for the hell this gun went through.

Very nice carbine. The finish doesn't look any darker than factory tho..That tru-oil is tough stuff, it holds up really well.

I'd like to get mine dark dark walnut but the wood just wont soak up the stain, no matter how much I put on it.

Thanks for posting up the pictures. Its a great model 92 you have there.

That leather wrap on the stock is one of the few I actually think looks really good. Nicely done.

                  Especially love the forend treatment!
Wish I had the skills and temerity to do the same to mine.

There are some things i have to add:
                      1. on the picture It looks much lighter than the real thing due to the strong LED lights.
                      2. It is as dark as i wanted it to be. It was the second attempt. The first was darker "walnut" which i did not like. The lighter version of "gunstock" is what appealed to me and came in "harmony" with the leatherwork.
                      3. Use a darker finish/stain. It will take it. With patience, you can stain even oak. I stained "mahogany" my oak knife handle. Took little time.

I read and reread many posts about the R92 staining. No one expressed any difficulty in re-staining the stock after proper finish removal. See all the links below.

Maybe you got "one of a kind" ;-)

Here are some links which might help you:
I'm going to refinish the stocks in my 92. There are no scratches or damage I'm trying to fix. I just want to make it a little sexier. I was planning on using many coats of Tru-oil. But where do I start? Once I remove the stocks from the gun. Should I try to remove the original stain that is on...

Not looking to do a full refinish, 20 hand rubbed coats, ect. I just want to wipe on a little oil to deepen the factory finish a little, so far on the list is Balistol or BLO, would one of these work or is there anything else I should consider?

Depends. What vintage is your 92? I ask because the one I have, purchased five years ago, new, has very porous grain. Almost like balsa wood. There was no gloss finish on it, either. I have simply oiled mine with Hoppes gun oil, and twice. No sanding or other prep. It's nice and smooth, though still appearing porous.

Try to wet-sand it with "Tru-Oil". The sand dust will fill the pores. Let it dry and repeat. After 3-4 layers it is going to be mirror-smooth with no pores. Use 400 grit sandpaper.

Actually it would be 3 of a kind. I'll be getting my 4th one on Saturday.

Its a common problem with the Brazillian mystery wood.

Chris, yours is a Puma or Legacy Arms, correct? It also has a very dark finish. I've noticed that with some of the older guns.

I hear ya. I spent a pretty penny on some Skinners signts that I can't use. I'll keep em for Cole and my Grandson.
