Saw this guys thread and thought, what about a side charging ar 308?

Anyone know if they make an ar 308 version?

Fulton Armory does. They also sell the handles by themselves so I am going to buy a couple and use my spare upper and build a .308 as well. After I do another 15 and make sure I have it down.

And if you want to compete with that format, and you need to have it not be semi auto in one state and have an upper for competition in another state then goofy is fine. Goofy is the least of our problems right now.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

AR with a White Oak Match upper for $1200 on the market.
Can add Ruger rpr to that list too, nice for price and function. Around $1200.

If only the POF-ReVolt Uppers were cheaper. I am thinking about using my my NFA side charging Upper and build a straight bolt pull back 6.5 Grendel Upper off a medium weight barrel. Since I already have a scope, 5/8x24 brake, and carrier group, I would only be out $350 and have another upper to play with.

Just to throw some fuel on the fire. From the new regs:

5471. Registration of Assault Weapons Pursuant to Penal -Code Section 30900(b)(1);Explanation of Terms Related to Assault Weapon Designation

hh) "Semiautomatic" means a firearm functionally able to fire a single cartridge eject the empty case and reload the chamber each time the trigger is pulled and released. Further, certain necessary mechanical parts that will allow a firearm to function in a semiautomatic nature must be present for a weapon to be deemed semiautomatic. A weapon clearly designed to be semiautomatic but lacking a firing pin, bolt carrier, gas tube, or some other crucial part of the firearm is not semiautomatic for purposes of Penal Code section 30515, 30600 and 34605(a) and 3Q900.

From reading this, it looks like all that needs to be done to create a non semiauto upper is to remove your gas tube. Flip around your gas block so it blocks the port and you should be good to go.

This seems like a fairly cost effective way of going bolt action on an AR with minimal fuss. Add in a side charge upper like a Matrix or NFA and you can even use your existing bcg. Something to ponder I suppose especially if you've put in work on building up the lower with new trigger, stock, etc. You can get your bolt action fix, avoid registration and keep all the features without having to swap guns.

This is nice to see that they put out some clarification for us let's hope it sticks! It would make the swap a lot easier for many.

So if you own a piston system AR & remove the piston, etc your left with a single shot rifle... And because it was never gas operated to begin with it should meet this criteria. Right?

Hard to say. I think it would be best to remove any part leading up to the gas key to be safe. Also the "actual regs" are not out yet so we are all kinda waiting to see if the proposed regs stick.

and install into an side charging upper and call it a day? There isn't a gas port so it would be a bolt action upper with no ability to me made into semi-auto. This whole thread has generated some interest for me in just making one for fun.
