Now lets add $640 for the trueing. So we are at $1490. Now add the cost of a barrel $325 (Lija) that takes us to $1815. We still have not added a stock. Stocks can run $350 to $950 and more. So this takes us seriously into $2500+ territory.
Well, you went the most expensive route to get a 700 action and whomever is charging you 640 to true the action is screwing you pretty hard.

That is true. I read another thread where the op pinched the gas tube and ran it that way. I know that isn't the best way nor would I go that route. Also read where the bolt catch was modified and was used similar to a charge handle. Not exactly sure how that works or what that would entail. Just looking at options and trying to be cheap but I know best would be either just buy a bolt action rifle or go with a side charge upper and eliminate the gas system. Has anyone used the side charge upper with a semi auto? Curious...

If the goal is compliance removal of the gas system entirely is the best idea, that way you dont have what is considered a "broken" semi auto. That is why I welded my barrel. I am gonna try to head out to where I shoot maybe today or tomorrow just to see how mine functions. I did buy the AR Stoner upper receiver with BCG. Head space is a go and it is completely together as of now. I have shot one before with the gas system in tact and it was pretty nice. As soon As I can get my other BCG back from my buddy I will attempt to drill it and make another It was supposed to already be hear but he hasnt been able to get by with it.

Here is a pretty honest comparison:
Savage model 12 BR in 6mmBR for $1650 MSRP and $1200 on the market.
          Weatherby Vanguard for around $1000.
          T/C ENCORE for around $800.
AR with a White Oak Match upper for $1200 on the market.

The savage will outshoot the AR. The Weatherby and TC will match or beat the AR depending on the load and the day. The AR will outshoot damn near every other bolt action off the shelf rifle out there.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

OP, you should look into British straight pull ARs. Here's a thread at AR-15.com that shows a conversion

As many of you know we can't have semi's over here, and the straight pull, manually operated AR is very popular. In light of the recent law changes in NY, I often get emails asking about selling uppers

You could also do this charge handle on a regular upper

I converted 2 of my ARs to manual AR. The gas system was taken our and gas hole was drilled and tapped for a screw. The screw was then file off to the contour of the barrel, so no one can take it out, used red Lock Tite for the screw. Since the rifles are manually operated, I guess I can use regular magazine release for the rifles.

So I just went out and put 50 rds through it at our family property. I am extremely happy with it. it functions perfect and is a pleasure to shoot. If I decide to do another one the only thing I would change is the side of the handle. Its not a deal breaker but if it were on the left side it would be nicer to pull. With it being on the right if you pull fast the case hits your hand sometimes. so the one I am going to build myself will be left side charge. I thought it would bum me out not being semi but honestly it didnt at all, it is actually really nice to pick your brass right off the table next to rifle and drop it back in the box.

I had considered this as well, it looks like it would function really well. I hate pump shotguns though and it just reminds me too much of them. I would love to try it though, leaving the buffer and spring in place should make for effortless recharging and could be better than i think.

Awesome. Other then the tig job on the barrel and the side charge upper. Was there anything else you needed to modify? Now I'm really tempted to do this to one of my builds. Possibly 6.5 Grendel. Who knows.

I did have to modify the rail I bought due to the billet upper, all I did was trim the flanged sides that would have went around the standard receiver. Not all rails would need it but mine did. I used a small coping saw blade and then filed it smooth. All by hand, other than the anodizing being gone at the cuts you cannot see that it's been cut. I will tear it all back apart and Cerakote it pretty soon but before I do I'm gonna go shoot it some more this week.
