When I was in the Army the qualification for the M16-A2 was 20 rounds from prone and 20 rounds standing in a hole. The targets are at 50, 100, 150, 200, 250?, and 300 yards. The targets are pop-up type on a timer. They only are up for a few seconds, but the pattern repeats. I became so accustomed to the rhythm that I could fire a shot just before the target popped up, and it would hit while the target was half way up. Sometimes one pops up, and other times two pop up. The targets from 100 to 300 yards are about the same size as the police silhouette half torso targets. The 50 yard target is just a head and partial shoulder target.

I think I can make Range12 at SacValley (1K) available on a Saturday.
I made a dollar on a bet on range 12 once.
After the end of the 1000yd practice cycle, one of the Norcal shooters asks me to bet a dollar for one shot to see who can be the closest to the center of the head while our targets were still up.

My shot landed about 3/4" off the left of dead center and his was about 3".
I guess I got the wind call better.

I see you're new here (May).... I recommend reading old threads in this subforum and you'll understand what happened.

No problem, it's the internet's fault.

Bryan and I and a couple others enjoy those; we'll "Benchrest" 5 down at once for smallest group or see who can hit the 7-ring line at 9:00 (think darts) after the String is done for sh*ts and giggles.

Seriously, for the relatively short time I've been shooting competitively it's obvious that it forces you to focus on all of the parts (rifle, handloads, wind-reading) that go into it. You're really shooting against yourself (well, and the wind ) but there are other shooters there and the scores are recorded.

Everyone talks up Appleseed but I think shooting a few organized matches will do much more for anyone who's serious about getting better, be it Rimfires at 50 or Centerfires at 600 or 1,000.

There IS actually the big Calguns shoot this coming weekend. Nothing competitive, more of a social event; I went one year, and it was fun.
