How far can you reliably shoot?

    Hey Guys,
I know there are a lot of virtual snipers out there but i was just curious...how far can you reliably shoot out to from a prone position. Reliably meaning you can consistently hit into a 8 inch wide pie plate/target.

200 yards on a very good day, 100 yards most days.

1,000 yards. Haven't had a chance to shoot out farther than that though.

Are we talking heavy barrel long range setups or are we talking average hunting rig setups?

200yrds is my limit with weatherby vanguard and 3x9x40 leupold. Hope to get better.

Depends on the weather. With my 30-06 I can usually get a good headshot on a silhouette at 800 without too much trouble. In heavy wind that can change.

600-800 yards is the longest I've shot I've consistently hit any target...under optimal conditions.

            400 yards iron sights M1A

            800 yards Remington 700 CDL .30-06, Bushnell Elite 3200 6x24-40

              iron sights or magnified?

on my ar15 with iron sights, I can do 200yds all day, 300 on a good day, 500 on a man sized target

              magnified on my buddy's R700 with a 12x scope, I can do 600

Any paper plates within 300 arshins should fear for their integrity if I have Mosin in hand.
                Scoped?
300m is usually as far as I go, but I think my .243 is on paper out to 500m - at that point though I'm just tossing lead down range.
All from a bench, on a clear day, with no glare, and a sturdy breakfast, and nobody shooting back at me...

500 meters so far for me. Looking forward to shoot out further some day.

What percentage of hits is required on the 8" plate?

Not sure if the term "the thousand yard stare" means the same thing to everybody. I think a few kill shots were made in WW1 with 30'06 comming out of a Springfield 1903A3 (iron sights).

I also hear a 165mm howitzer is good at 16 miles.

                        Depending on gun.
I can hit consistently at 500/600 with my bolt guns. Ive done well at up to 1000 but the conditions have to be optimal.

since the longest range i've visited is at 200 yards. that is my limit for now.

until i visit a range that goes further i have no clue how I will shoot.

I have learned from the last CAPRC match that having an accurate rifle and good range dope only helps you to a point.

Then after that, it's about building the most solid shooting position that you can from your surroundings.

At least in those courses of fire, we were rarely able to shoot from bipod/prone.

Instead we had to shoot from supported and unsupported sitting/kneeling, behind plywood barricades, on top of cinderblocks, and through the different rungs of a ladder.

When the support was there, hits on 1-2 MOA sized targets at 600 yards were no problem.

When the support was not there, I could not hit 2 MOA sized targets at 200 yards, nor could I hit billiard ball sized targets at 50 or 100.

I had been practicing too much from sturdy, comfortable positions on the bench and on the ground, and now I was hunched over / squatting / reverse-kneeling and shooting like crap.

This is where those shooting bags/pillows come in handy. Anything you can wedge into your flexed joints to relieve muscle tension really helps to stabilize your sight picture.

That is so true. Every time there is a 200yrd offhand stage I get a reminder of where my skills are.
