Yes, just trying to help the OP and other new shooters. I cringe when I see a centerfire rifle shooting at 25 yards, it's just not necessary and you learn nothing because a 25 yard zero and a 100 yard zero can be very different. Another tip if you will indulge me, take the small "Shoot N See" pasters and put them on a clean sheet of paper. It's a much better aiming point for a scoped rifle and there are a bunch of them in most target packs.sigpicComment

I appreciate the advice. I don't have a lot of experience with precision shooting so I am trying to learn as much as I can.Yes, just trying to help the OP and other new shooters. I was shooting from a bi pod on the table at Lytle Creek, so I didn't try bore sighting it. That's the only reason I shot at 25 yards. I had a rear bag with me but there wasn't enough room to use the bag and the bi pod on their tables.Comment

We all started there . . . and I am still a rookie !I appreciate the advice. I don't have a lot of experience with precision shooting so I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Like DivernHunter I also shoot my rifles at 25 yards to get a shot on paper. I use a large target stapled up backwards so it's all blank and put a small circle on it.
One or two shots is all it takes and you can head to one hundred yards after that.
OP.
Try a bunch of different ammo once you get things all tightened up. If the shots are still moving get the rifle bedded.
The best shooting 308 factory ammo I ever shot was PMC 150 grain hunting ammo and Federal Gold Medal didn't shoot as well in any of my rifles.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

You went out and shot your Remy 700, had a blast and learned a few things.
You were kind enough to share your experience with us and unfortunately the naysayer had to get their licks in. The Remy 700 is an awesome rifle.
Hope you have years of shooting fun!

I have a couple hundred 208 a maxs I want to try working up a load for but if that doesn't work, I'll try any .30-06 factory load I can get. The Long Range has the Bell and Carlson M40 stock, which has an aluminum bedding block. Hopefully I can get by without bedding it.Like DivernHunter I also shoot my rifles at 25 yards to get a shot on paper. Thanks. That's all I was trying to do.Comment

Great rifle and you have started a journey that is fun and interesting. Every trip to the range is a learning experience for me. Enjoy your rifle, you have a nice one.Comment

+1 on printing you own targets... I print mine on the regular old printer paper and Ill use the back side something that has already been printed on if I have that around too.
Sometimes I just use those 1" orange paster stickers on a large piece of backing.
If you want to make better use of your targets when shooting groups, just dial a MIL or two up, down, left, or right and use the same point of aim...
100 yards is also an awful close distance to use a shoot-n-see target. I don't even need those at 300 yards with a 30 cal sized bullet.
What type of optic are you using OP? What magnification range are you working with? The way the optic is setup can really change how your day goes at the range. You want something that has good tracking, and with a reticle that allows you to measure items on target like a ruler. You should be able to take those measurements and make the adjustments using your turrets. There should be no guessing games... there is no reason to shoot and move, shoot and move, shoot and move.ExtremeXComment

You sure about that? You mean 6-24x50, or the 4-16x50 Viper PST or a different series?
I'm just trying to understand how the scope is setup and what you are working with... What reticle / turret combo did you go with?
I've owned both... you don't need to waste your money on shoot-n-see targets, you don't need it with that scope, its got enough magnification and resolution for you to make out small details at those distances.Last edited by ExtremeX; 08-14-2016, 10:06 PM.ExtremeXComment
