First range trip with my 700 Long Range

So I finally took out my Remington 700 M40 Long Range in .30-06 this weekend. I only had some PPU M2 ball .30-06 so I was just looking to zero the scope and plink. I got it zeroed at 25 yards and then went out to 100 yards. At the next cease fire, I went down range and put up a fresh target to try for some groups. It started well but then I learned a valuable lesson the hard way. The first three shots where in a nice clover. The fourth shot landed just off the first three. The fifth shot went high so I figured I pulled it. The next shot went even higher. I thought my zero was off so I adjusted the scope and the next two shots landed just to the right of the first four. The next few shots were all over and I couldn't figure out why. Eventually, I thought to check the rings and yes, the rear ring was loose. I thought I checked the torque but I forgot. What started out with a really promising group ended up a good learning experience.

Either way, the rifle did well with some blasting ammo, so I can't wait to see what it can do with some hand loads, and properly torqued rings.

The first three shots landed on the upper left of the 10 ring.

Edit: I am bringing this thread back to life. Hoping to update this as my experience with the rifle grows and as I upgrade it.

At least you learned from it

So post the groupings again next time you shoot the rifle - would love to see them !

The story is interesting but the target is useless for any discussion. Post again when you have something to look at. Shooting a 30-06 at 25 yards is a waste of time and ammo, next time bore sight that gun and start at 100 yards. We'll be waiting for your post.

That target was shot at 100 yards.

The ones marked red are the first three shots. I wasn't really discussing the groups. Just how I forgot to check the torque on the screws on my rings.

I think the point he was trying to make is that you don't need to start at 25 yards... its literally a waste of time and ammo.

Just setup the target at 100, pull the bolt out, hold the rifle steady, look through the barrel and get on target. Alternate looking though the optic and down the barrel and move the scopes POA on center and make sure the barrel is on center with the target too.

That easily gets you on paper... If you have a target scope, just measure the correction after the first shot and dial that into the scope.

Should not take more than a couple shots to dial it in.

Just start shooting groups from there and confirm your work, make any adjustments if needed.

              Here you go !

And why do you keep shooting at the same target ?

How do you know what groups you are shooting . . .

Just taking the 3 closest - actually I would go for 5 - groups doesn't work

Slightly off topic, I always chuckle a little inside when I hear someone asking for a laser boresighter at a gun shop...

It was my last shoot n see I had. I was at Lytle Creek and they usually have steel at 100, 200 and 300 yards but they took it all down due to the drought.

They three I highlighted were the first three I shot. I was going to shoot a 5 round group but that's when stuff started moving around.

Why don't you just print your targets - costs close to nothing

And take your torque wrench with you - you never know what might happen !

I like the shoot n sees but they do get expensive.

I usually have the torque wrench in my bag but I had to tighten the grip panel screws on my 1911 and I left the wrench at home.

                        Try this...

I also use a cardboard backer though. I have some parts that get shipped to my work that have flat cardboard pieces in between parts. I take these home and staple or sticky spray the paper targets to the cardboard. Helps keep the holes clean without ripping the paper apart.

I like the 100 yard benchrest one. Nice bull to aim or to bracket a crosshair with.

Before you go to the range again check the screws/bolts holding the action into the stock also. Might save you some ammo.

Do not worry about the people saying not to shoot at 25 yards. I do it all the time with a new scope/rifle or when I move a scope. It takes me about 2-3 rounds to get on paper where I then move to 100 yards. Quick and easy when you know what you are doing and do not want to super sandbag the rifle so it does not move. Sometimes I just shoot at a spot in the dirt(or a clay pigeon placed there) and see when the bullet strikes at 100 yards. A couple of quick adjustments and we are ready to fine tune the scope.

                          PS---Enjoy your rifle

Perfect one - even better than the one I mentioned

But finally it's just the group you need to measure
