OP, I made the same mistake but did it in a competition. I was a teenager and I shooting my first smallbore match which uses scopes in some stages of the match. My shots were all over the target and I could not figure out what was wrong. Thankfully, an Olympic Shooting Team member, Lones Wigger, was watching me, and he came to my aid, and quickly diagnosed the problem, and got my scope tightened. That happened in 1973, and I never made that mistake again.

Regarding sighting in at 25 yards, if I have a rifle and scope that has not been zeroed, I start at 25 yards. You only need a couple of shots to verify, that your bore sighting was done correctly or incorrectly and to make adjustments so that you are on paper at 100 yards. I once tried shooting a new rifle and scope at 100 yards, and my bore sighting was so far off, that I was not hitting paper, that was a waste of ammo.

I guess I'm the odd man out, LOL. I go right to 100 yards and bore sight through the barrel. 99% of the time I'm in the black with the first shot. I count clicks from there and I'm in the 10 ring on the second shot.
If I'm lazy or can't bore sight the rifle (M1A as an example), I aim at a dirt clod or rock and take a shot. The dust kicked up tells me if I'm close enough to move to paper. I will admit to owning a lot of rifles so I've had A LOT of practice doing this, so maybe that's why it seems so easy to me?

New scope on a rifle = start at 25 yards even if bore sighted when the scope was mounted. I've tried it before starting at 100 and been frustrated as I can't seem to get on paper and I'm burning through expensive hunting ammo. 2-3 shots will typically do the trick.

I think so. XTC and Midrange gives lots of practice in just looking at the target and knowing exactly how many minutes elevation/windage to get in the X-ring.

You were kind enough to share your "experience" with us and unfortunately the naysayer had to get their licks in. The Remy 700 is an awesome rifle.

Unless your barrel is bent, on crooked, or your rings/base are bent... you should be pretty close to POA=POI if you mechanically center your scope. At least in my experience. Usually takes me about 3-5 shots to zero and confirm. I'll do a 3-shot group. Adjust my turrets, and another few shots to confirm. Done.

I'll try that after I remount my scope. I want to check the level again to make sure it hasn't rotated in the rings.

I now level my scope at the range. I put a tall target up with a straight line and level it with a level. Then I line up my crosshairs with the target while I'm in a shooting position.

That's a better way to do it because having your scope level to your rifle doesn't matter. What matters is having the scope level to the horizon. Because most people shoot with a canted rifle. Canted rifle + scope level to horizon = ok. Scope leveled to the rifle, but canted rifle = bad.

I just ordered two boxes of HSM 208 A Max match. Hopefully, I'll be back at the range in a week or two to try it out.
