If it ever goes bad, I am grabbing my Glocks. I also know how to work on them and have spare parts. A broken gun is a useless gun.

My experiences are similar to yours.I won't try to convince you guys to buy a Glock over that Colt, but I'll share my experiences.
I own three Glocks, a 26, and two 19s.
Between all three, they've eaten close to 5k rounds and I experienced one failure total on a reload. I also carry these daily.
I've owned three 1911 pattern pistols, a Colt Combat Elite, a Rock Island Compact, and a Colt Defender.
The Combat Elite will only reliably feed FMJs, and has had failures with them, also. I've fired maybe 1100 FMJs, and maybe 5 or so failures in FMJ. JHPs, one failure per magazine between multiple different brands.
The Defender feeds FMJ fine, but JHP has had 2/140 failures on JHPs (Golden Sabers).
The RIA was suffering premature slide lock on JHPs and FMJs.
So yeah, the 1911s are a dream to shoot, but when my life depends on it....Glock.
The 1911s are race cars. Great for the track (range) but far too high maintenance for the street.
Glocks are like Hondas.....great for a daily and with some work make decent track cars.
I've owned 5 1911s, and 7 Glocks. Of the 1911s, I had a Springfield Armory GI which was unfortunately a jamomatic. Lubed it, shot it a few hundred rounds, racked/dry fired it many many many times - didn't matter. I had an Armscor from the PI which looked like it was machined by a 12-year old Filipino kid with a Dremel in some filthy, poorly-lit machine sweatshop in the Tondo slums. It would work for a couple of magazines, then start to jam. I also had a Springfield 9mm 1911 which was perfectly reliable and a dream to shoot. The only 1911 I still have is a Colt XSE, which is likewise a wonderful, accurate, and very easy to shoot pistol. It's also very easy on the eyes.
Every single Glock I've owned (several 34s, a 19, a 21sf, a 30sf, and the only one I've got now, a 22) was dead nuts reliable from the first round.
No, Glocks ain't pretty, and a 1911 is as much a classic piece of Americana as a Colt SAA, but if I had to take one handgun and head for the hills (Beverly Hills, that is), it would be that hideous contraption made by that Austrian curtain rod maker."Two dead?!? HOW?!?"

I still have all my Glocks but only kept one 1911.
Sold the Defender to my Dad and the RIA for a steal here ($275 because it needed a new slide stop, which was the heart of all its problems).
Still have the Colt Combat Elite......its a pretty good gun that is mostly reliable on FMJ.
The last time I took it out, I ran 200 rounds and had no failures, then handed it to my cousin and of course he had a type 3 on the first mag
Not sure why, but it was pretty dry after the first 200 so that might be itComment

+1. I also would not personally get the Glock in .45ACP (personal preference due to the lightness vs recoil). But I would get a Glock for self defense use over the 1911 any day of the week. In my case, familiarity with the Glock is a huge factor me. Everything about it is now second nature for me. All muscle memory. But originally things like capacity, easy of use, and reliability were all deciding factors. My go to HD handgun is my Glock 17. It's an ol' friend!
Don't get me wrong. I like 1911s. It is even safe to say I LOVE 1911s. I've owned a Kimber Custom II in the past and currently own a Sig TTT. My dream is to own an Ed Brown Special Forces some day. Great guns. Amazing trigger that makes marksmanship a breeze. Perfect platform for the 45ACP because the weight of all that steel helps absorb the felt recoil. The issue is they have low round count, only 8 rounds in a flush fitting magazine. 7 if you want to make sure the magazine is guaranteed to seat properly every time. Plus there is the thumb safety. Which you can train yourself to flip off, but building that muscle memory is gonna take time - years before it is totally automatic and guaranteed to the point you no longer need to even think about it. Lastly there is a laundry list of 1911 specific quirks that effect reliability. You've gotta keep after the maintenance, especially with older extractors that constantly need the tension adjusted to make sure they don't jam. Things old school 1911s guys do automatically and no longer even notice...but would be found to be quirky by a new shooter and might get missed.
Fans of the 1911 in 45ACP say things like, but it's a one shot one stop gun so who needs all those extra rounds? Or if they can't stop him with 8 they deserve whats coming. That assumes there is only one bad guy! Cartels and gangs don't work that way. They come in force. And for a laundry list of reasons the Cartels have moved north into California big time. It may not make the evening news, because it is politically incorrect to say anything negative at all about illegal immigration, but we have a HUGE cartel problem here in California. Especially in the sticks where all the pot grows are. It is shocking what a huge problem they have become. I always thought of Pot as a harmless drug, but a lot of people are getting killed over it and a really dangerous element is moving into areas we once thought of as peaceful and safe places to live. My parents used to leave their doors unlocked at night. Additionally people are afraid to go kicking in the hills lest they accidentally stumble on somebody's grow. All of which are heavily guarded due to the competition and raids by law enforcement. When the wind kicks up you can smell the pot all over Butte County. It is a really sad development. If not for the cartels and increased crime (murders, robberies, etc) I wouldn't care what people were growing. But they sadly go hand in hand. It's a side of marijuana that pot heads and voters refuse to admit exists.Last edited by tacticalcity; 01-12-2015, 3:34 PM.Comment

1911 all the way. 8 rounds not enough? Buy more mags...Laws against murder and attempted murder should have been the only gun control laws ever needed in America...Comment

If the opportunity arises to test drive one, I will do it. They are just so expensive as is the ammo though. I see some 1911s in the 3k dollar range.sigpic

Haha you got that picture from a movie. The garand is won us the ground war. You guys are off your rockers. 1911 is usually more accurate, and has less felt recoil, and usually a nice trigger but the antique ends there. That is all there is no more bonus in modern day use. That is all, nothing to see here, please move along

Have you fired a bone stock GI model lately?Haha you got that picture from a movie. The garand is won us the ground war. Sights are ***, can't hit anything because the sights are ***. The Glock does seem to do a slightly better job at taming recoil. The trigger is usually so bad that it causes people to drop their shots but that doesn't matter because the sights are ***. Did I mention the sights are ***?
The stock Glock trigger and sights are at least useable out of the box.Last edited by himurax13; 01-12-2015, 6:41 PM.Originally posted by BumslieHK - the best 600 dollar gun, 900 dollars can buy.Originally posted by SleighterGetting legal advice from a gun salesman, is like getting medical advice from a janitor at a hospital.
