Recommend a .44 mag?

I shoot my ruger super blackhawk .44 7.5" with ease. I shoot it one handed to show new or even people who shot, that its not hard at all. The reason why I bought it, I go backpacking and needed something with umph!

That will likely be the .44 I go for before long. I think they look sweet and I've fired the standard blackhawk .44s and they are good shooters. Only thing I'd rather have is a full lug 629 6" stainless but they seem to be tough to find and pricey when you find them.

I’ve had a very good experience with a Taurus Raging Bull. It’s super accurate and the big soft grips and good ergos really help soak up the recoil. Nice trigger too. It works for me and in fact, it has relegated my Super Redhawk to a supporting roll.

But it’s best to try to rent/test some to see what works for you (everyone’s different in what they like).

It’s also a great excuse to get into reloading, that way you can make mild to wild loads and not be at the mercy of factory offerings.

we can all shoot it just fine. We can all induce a flinch for ourselves too. Doing the trail boss or special brass are options and reloading is in fact how to get the .44mag to be super-dee-duper but I don't think people give adequate forethought to owning the big boomers before they do so and they usually end up selling it a few months later when they find out they're not as tough and their nerves not nearly as steeled as they thought they were.

No I've thought it through. I know how expensive the factory loads are, and that they're not exactly the best regarding high power. I do actually have access to reloading equipment (my dad already has all the equipment as he reloads his. I can crash his garage; he won't mind, in fact he'll love teaching me) and I do plan on reloading .44 mag, if I end up buying one.

But I do know how the high power loads feel. I've shot them. My dad loves loading hot loads, as he calls them. I enjoy shooting them. But I don't intend this to be a gun that I put 500 rounds through every weekend at the range at all. I'm not buying it expecting to be able to pop off a few hundred rounds like I'd be able to with a .38 special.

I'm going to be honest though, it's all about the bang for me. I enjoy shooting rounds with high power and heavy recoil and that's just the way it is for me. Granted, I can't go through the volume like I can with something lighter, but I find it to be great fun. I know what I'm getting myself into.

Years ago friend & I had maybe a 100 pounds of Linotype which we cast into 205 grain FN sort of a semi wadcutter but not sharp shoulder, I load it with some Unique pretty mild but accurate as hell, my 1894 Marlin really likes its, do have four pounds of Trail Boss I'll find a load using those bullets, probably down to just a few thousand now, and sold the mould probably 25 years ago.
Do use Winchester 296 when I need some zip.

I'm seriously considering buying one as a range toy. Can someone recommend one? Unfortunately, the only .44 mag I've fired thus far is my dad's Colt, and the chances that I'll find that in a gun shop any time soon in my area is quite low (plus the price tag for one I've seen online is a bit of a shock lol, for a used firearm)

So I'm looking for some more....common, I guess, recommendations. What handles well; what's well built. I'm familiar with what manufacturers have models in production currently. But like I said, I haven't fired any. Don't worry I'm not going to just go buy one on recommendation, but I'd like a place to start when I go to rent.

As far as personal preference goes, I'd like large frame. As large as possible actually. I'm equally open to single and double action revolvers. I'm open to used firearms, so it doesn't have to be currently in production, only commonly available.

If you are still taking ideas in, then allow me to suggest a Desert Eagle in .44 mag.

1. They are soft shooting and because they are semi automatic handguns they absorb a lot of recoil. Mine is a daily driver to the range. I had my barrel comped from Magnum Research before I ever shot it but it is so soft will full power loads (reloads only) that I can prolly shoot about 500+ rounds before my hands hurt.

2. The Desert Eagle is accurate. If you put a red dot sight on it or a laser that hangs off to the side and sight it in you will find it very easy to hit things. But even with iron sights, I did a good 4" group at 25' once with all black sights before I had them upgraded, I have not tested it since I had it upgraded but I like that it is for the most part, close to what I aim at.

3. The Desert Eagle is versatile allowing you to shoot: 41 mag, 44 mag, 50 AE and .357 mag. You can switch between 44 mag and 50 AE in under a minute, just change out the barrel and swap out mags. Field stripping is also very easy to do.

4. The Desert Eagle has more firepower then the handguns. The mags hold 7 +1 50 AE or 8 +1 .44 mag or 9 +1 .357. I dunno what 41 mag is. Reloading is a drop of the mag away.

5. Magnum Research is a very good company as far as customer service is concerned. I have sent in my gun for various things and they have always had fast turn around times and had good communication with me. I do not think I will ever talk ill of them with a past like that.

6. Deagles have been around for a long time, everybody has a revolver, but there is really only one Desert Eagle. Get it, give it a different coating and run with it.

I've owned 2 revolvers in 44mag and a Desert Eagle in 44mag. All where fun to shoot but the revolvers where sold off once I got the DE. They are just plain fun to shoot and if you reload they're much better to own.
