And thanks guys. That's a lot to consider. I'm not sure I'm any closer to finding a starting point though I may just have to try everything I can get my hands on. I'm leaning more towards a S&W model. But we'll see. I'll have to test some out. Ruger may and up being the winner. I do love my GP100. And I might consider a Magnum Research at some point. But....there's just something about a revolver that I really love. A new semi auto isn't really on my radar right now.

I accidentally bought a 1911 instead. Oops lol. Nah, truth be told I couldn't find a .44 mag that interested me in any of my local FFLs so I picked something else on my need to buy list.

I'll wait until I find something I like, rather than settling.

All the previous choices cited for a .44 Magnum are good, but if you want a Great .44 Mag revolver; , there is only one.

Ruger Super Blackhawk 4 3/4 inch with Hogue grips. If I was looking today I would do the same only in .41 Mag.

Hard to find, but a great sleeper is a Taurus m44. Brazilian copy of the s&w m29. Strong and accurate, although not as strong as the rugers. I lucked into a blued 4" range rental years ago. Don't know how many rounds it's shot, but it's my favorite big bore revolver. It loves 240gr lead swcs backed by a load of 700x

I'm a Smith lover. I do like the look of some of the Rugers but the Smith's seem like finer machinery in my hand(s). For someone like me, I suspect they will all shoot about the same but I buy what I like.
So with that said, the Smith 629 series (or 329 or some of their classic versions of the x29's) are very nice. A 6" barrel is nice if you're only using it for the range. If you're going to take it backpacking, the longer barrel gets a bit, well, long.
I went with the 'revolver meets Federation phaser' and bought the 629 V-Comp from the Smith Performance Center. I really like the way it shoots with the worked over trigger and rest of machinery. And I was smitten by the appearance. It does have added value in that, even though it has only a 4" barrel, the full lugged design with a compensator (which is removable but I never do) makes it very comfortable to shoot with full power mags which few other .44M's can do.
BTW, I have the equivalent model in .357 as well (5" barrel + Comp) and it's excellent as well.

I'm seriously considering buying one as a range toy. Can someone recommend one? Unfortunately, the only .44 mag I've fired thus far is my dad's Colt, and the chances that I'll find that in a gun shop any time soon in my area is quite low (plus the price tag for one I've seen online is a bit of a shock lol, for a used firearm)

So I'm looking for some more....common, I guess, recommendations. What handles well; what's well built. I'm familiar with what manufacturers have models in production currently. But like I said, I haven't fired any. Don't worry I'm not going to just go buy one on recommendation, but I'd like a place to start when I go to rent.

As far as personal preference goes, I'd like large frame. As large as possible actually. I'm equally open to single and double action revolvers. I'm open to used firearms, so it doesn't have to be currently in production, only commonly available.
